I have a Syntakt and the J-6 and S-1 and I am soooooo tempted to add a Torso t-1 to my setup, but I’m not sure I will get along with the Torso. Unfortunately it is just a bit too expensive for an impulse buy. Do you think it really adds to your workflow or would you easily be able to perform relatively the same without the t-1?
@hexwavemusic
@hexwavemusic 5 ай бұрын
I'll jump in here, the T1 absolutely lets you do a lot of stuff you can't do otherwise. You can quickly wrangle all your machines on one sequencer and morph and shift the pattern on the fly. Once you get used to it and learn it (it has a bit of a curve), there's nothing really like it. However, I will say it does make creating specific melodies more difficult. You can do it, but if you want to make your sequences entirely on the T1, it takes a long time vs on an Elektron. The T1 excels in quick, generative, shifting, morphable patterns. You just have to be okay with no screen at all and remembering what the colors of the squares mean in certain scenarios. Atlas Castle has had a lot more experience than me (I did sell mine with a gear shift but miss it!) so I'm sure he can give some more insights :)
@stofbug
@stofbug 5 ай бұрын
@@hexwavemusic Thanks for the elaborate reply. The part of using it for generative, morphable patterns sounds right up my alley. I’m not necessarily interested in creating specific melodies, instead I like my jams to evolve over time. Therefore the t-1 sounds really interesting.
@tylerstup9510

I have the same set up as you! The torso totally opened up my ability to jam coherently. The big secret to not getting totally same results every time is definitely to make sure you are making different decisions and changing up inspo. I was in a rut for a while with it before I realized I needed to just start twisting knobs and pushing myself through options that sounded bad!
@castl_dk
@castl_dk 5 ай бұрын
Hi @stofbug, thanks for taking time to listen and reaching out! I can see that @hexwavemusic and @tylerstup9510 already got you covered with relevant points. I do agree with them. I really see the T1 as a full capable instrument, not just a controller. It's a powerful instrument and main sequencer since you are into generative, morphable patterns sounds. Feel so welcome to reach out again if you have further questions.

Hey dude I’m loving your jams and I’d like to know what your favorite pieces of gear are in regard to how nicely they work together and what brought you from your earlier setups to this one?
@castl_dk
@castl_dk 10 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for taking the time to reach out! This is a very interesting question. You had me reflecting on my process in a very constructive way. I started music production back then through Ableton Live. My main brain and vision were 100% based in the DAW back then. I eventually found out that I had too many choices in the DAW at my disposal that I wasn't really good at finishing music that way. I decided to change my approach and use the DAW only for live recording and mastering. I later decided to grab a Digitakt and tried to create, write, produce, and perform from this engine only. This tiny beast really gave me the room to be creative while embracing limitations. So for the last 3 years, I would say that the DT was my top 1 favorite piece of gear. I recently realized that I wanted this project to be mainly based on live improvisations, starting all my jams and live sets from a white canvas. The Torso T1 is so far proving to be my new favorite companion in the matter of doing so! Being limited to a powerful sequencer/main brain, versatile samples, and 1 synth is so far proving to be my best trio. Let's see how this adventure will evolve. My rule number one in this whole process is to stick to less is more. Which means that my setup needs to fit in a regular backpack. That's also a way to limit my GAS :D I hope I answered your question. I could have written a tome about my previous setups, but I tried to keep it bearable haha. Wishing you a lovely evening out there. How about you? What's your favorite piece of gear?
@streetdoghanoi
@streetdoghanoi 10 ай бұрын
@@castl_dk Thanks for the reply and actually I'm trying to build a similarly minded setup to yours! I recently got a Digitakt and now I get to understand why it gets so much love, I find all gear has a honeymoon period but its not until that period is over that you really know how much you want to use it. The Digitakt I've been finding to be really fun and it seems every time I sit down with it I walk away having created something cool, it's a great machine. I love my TR-8S also and I'm experimenting with blending them together, it's working quite nicely so far actually even though probably it's a bit overkill. This year I want to play live and I've never done that with electronic music before (done a lot with grunge metal bands so hopefully a lot of that experience is transferable). My 3rd piece of gear is my iPad, this is just great for letting me route midi, process audio and use synth and sequencer plugins as needed. I have some hardware synths that I love (Peak/Boog Model D/S-1/TB-3) but I want to keep things as portable as possible for now so they will be a second "don't leave the house" setup that I just jam on when I want to make more ambient stuff. But yeah after cycling through gear swaps and buying and selling I'd def say Digitakt/TR-8S/Peak/Model D are the ones that must remain and the iPad is always at the heart of my setup. I've only been doing this for a couple of years but I've learned that its a difficult hobby to try stuff before you buy it because its so niche, you kinda have to own the gear to know if its for you. The live setup though is based on portability, I gotta be able to carry that around. Also fun/improvisation, those things have to be there or what's the point right? The rest, they're just the ones I don't want to sell because I'd miss them.

Hey Atlas 🎧🎥 I like the way you created the video 📽🎬 It's more personal and is basically KZbinr-like ... Passion becomes obvious and visible. You also look tres sympa 😛Those mistakes 🎚🎛 are not that bad from outer perspective, only you know what you've planned. If you don't say, maybe few people only would notice 🙂 You seem to me to be able just play around and have fun, I can't reach this point, I feel so much goal oriented (I'm a project manager), that it steals the joy and freedom from me ... Have you ever been there? 🎹
@castl_dk
@castl_dk 10 ай бұрын
Merci! :D (The accent follows along haha). - I can definitely understand what you're saying. Having a goal-oriented approach is a significant strength in this industry. (Especially when you have the necessary tools and background to maintain consistent progress). However, there are downsides to it. When I initially started this project in 2019, I was using a DAW and sticking to a release schedule. It took me two years to realize that I wasn't enjoying the creative process as much as I could have. - Then, in 2021, I discovered the Digitakt and the DAWless live scene, and everything changed. The community helped me a lot in redefining my artistic vision, approach and goals. While my goals for this project remain the same, I've come to accept that my methods may not align with the traditional music business industry. And I'm okay with that. Good things take time and dedication, in my opinion, we shouldn't rush the artistic process. This is how I keep the joy of creating alive I think :).
