Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"

I remember my dad showing Fawlty Towers to me and my brother for the first time, we rolled our eyes expecting some lame old TV show. How wrong we were, absolutely loved it and one of my favourites to this day.

Prunella scales❤what an absolutely lovely human soul.🤗 So 😂😂 how she managed Mr Fawlty😁😂 Watched her with (hubby) Timothy on their canal journeys, With both admiration.&. adoration!! Tinged with a little sadness! Due to her declining health.😔 Still absolutely beautiful through soul mind. The cast of Fawlty Towers. How could you describe it other than simply. Brilliance!

One of the greatest comedies ever, it could have run for 20 years. Comedy is usually cultural, but this one spans ALL cultures. It is funny and understood in every language.
@jamesmcgrath38413 күн бұрын
No it couldn't have. John Cleese made a very smart decision to end it after 12 episodes. Classics. But the comedy would have worn thin and instead of going out on top it would have gotten old and stale. Knowing when to quit is what made it a priceless gem.
@TOGAB3 күн бұрын
@@jamesmcgrath3841 Absolutely disagree, as do most, just read the comments. You my friend are a very small minority. Simply because 12 episodes of anything, even if it's marginally good, is paltry and anemic, as well as not nearly adequate. On top of that I stand by my statement, there was more than enough character and local story around Torquay for that level of genius to keep going at least a few more years. Twelve episodes, wtf? And if it was enough why are the millions still clambering for more, having to watch the same baker's dozen episodes over and over ad nauseum? The math says you're wrong, as was Clease when he bailed. And it is well-documented in interview and documentary that he quit for reasons much more complicated than, "it was time".

Basil Fawlty is wonderfully passive-aggressive. Problems in the bedroom department, no doubt. I sometimes get passive-aggressive treatment in a supermarket when I don't hand over the money fast enough. It adds to the already unbearable suffering of the checkout clerk to not be able to quickly enough process the payment for my miserable purchase of groceries.

The best thing about Fawlty towers ( and other old shows ) is no matter how bad the lead man/ woman is we still like them and are on their side. Today the characters of lead men/women are not so likeable. That's not to say they aren't great actors, they are, but....they lack a certain warmth and empathy - maybe like a lot of people in the public eye these days.

Remember the days when the BBC produced great TV, but never mind those days are long gone, just woke safe comedy if you can even call it comedy, where did it all go wrong
