No it couldn't have. John Cleese made a very smart decision to end it after 12 episodes. Classics. But the comedy would have worn thin and instead of going out on top it would have gotten old and stale. Knowing when to quit is what made it a priceless gem.

Simply because 12 episodes of anything, even if it's marginally good, is paltry and anemic, as well as not nearly adequate. On top of that I stand by my statement, there was more than enough character and local story around Torquay for that level of genius to keep going at least a few more years. Twelve episodes, wtf? And if it was enough why are the millions still clambering for more, having to watch the same baker's dozen episodes over and over ad nauseum? The math says you're wrong, as was Clease when he bailed. And it is well-documented in interview and documentary that he quit for reasons much more complicated than, "it was time".
