Seeing that you haven't had any comments, I'm going to try a few. Number one, the volume is too low to hear the directions. Second, you know what you are doing when making sour pickles. My mom would make polish pickles from my grandfather's recipe, but from the taste long ago, they were actually half-sours and tasted spectacular....She made them in a big metal pot half full of water , then she added salt, pickling spices, fresh dill and pickling dukes. Then covered them with a dinner plate and a cheese cloth. Every few days she would skim the foam off of the top and after a week it was time to try them. Back in the 40's and 50's pickles were mostly a nickle apiece and at the ESSEX LUNCH in downtown BOSTON you could buy a pastrami sandwich for 75 CENTS or less and the half sour pick- less were already on the table in a bowl for free. Those were the best days for sure. Nice chatting with you.

If you go ahead and boil the liquid down to crystals (dry), the impurities separate during the cooking process, and then you can rehydrate the crystals and be confident that your lye concentration is spot on, because the crystals are pure anhydrous Potassium Hydroxide, just like the lye drain cleaner you get from the store (which you can also use). Just an FYI. Nice video! Thanks!

Lye has several uses. It can be used to process foods like corn to hominy. Shredded aluminum foil added to lye makes hydrogen gas which can be used in balloons. I believe it will etch iron and steel so it can be used to clean neglected iron cook ware ond ovens.

Yep. And you will not have a single skin issue you'd usually get with manufactured chemical soaps. You have absolute control over what goes in and on your body. You don't need to "buy" jack

Hi, can you mix the lye and fat through the cold process only, without inducing any heat? I mean, what's the point of heating the fat, prior to adding the lye? Would mixing these two, without any heat result in saponification, as well? Thanks
@PrimalWoods
@PrimalWoods Жыл бұрын
The heat is a requirement to drive the saponification reaction as I understand it. Also, not all of the potassium in the lye water, in fact probably little, is in the form of KOH to begin with, and the heat also drives reaction(s) resulting in the production of KOH from other compounds; the KOH is then consumed in the saponification.

I think the answer some people are looking for is that too much lye, too high of a concentration, can be caustic. That’s why it’s important to know what you have.

Poor instructions Mostly accurate but still poor Since you only need to do 1 thing wrong to possibly have bad test results First step is not 1 qt but yet proper circulation suggested at 24 hours there are also ways to make sure it is circulating PH. after dipping shake excess water off of strip Laying ph strip on a surface can give false readings Adding sulphuric acid Dropper should be vertical and approximately 1 second between drops to insure consistency in drop size And by now i guess you have learn that the reagents can fail quickly I can give more accurate advice if you desire

No.1 Lesson... Make a few Splits and or Nucs in the 6 Months before Winter. You then have an Insurance Policy if .... A Colony losses a Queen, just combine remaining Bees with that Nuc. Or, add a Nuc / + Box under a weak Colony : by using Double Screen Floors. The rising Warmth will benefit both. Each Hive must have its own Entrance ! They are two Colonies in a kind of Apartment Block. You also might have lost those Bees from Varroa, and or not doing any Mite Treatment in the months before Winter. Eg do V.M Treating by Aug, Sept. Before Winter Bees are Bred. 👀 Just saying.... You learn from your mistakes. Its all learning not to do the same next Season. 🐝

Don't put scrapped Comb or Honey at the Hive Entrance.... you will just encourage Robbing ! Bees from all over the place will 'smell' a weak Colony, and smell that Honey.... And before you know it, they will just strip a Hives resources to Nil in an Hour or so ! 🥺 Better to collect into a lidded tub, and when your done, just place those bits back into the same Hive.... Bees will clean and move it back into the Colony. Also don't share scrappings with other Hives. You can spread Disease, Viruses, even Varroa that way. 😖 Just saying. 😎 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝 Happy Beekeeping 2022. 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝

Bar soap you buy from companies in the store use scents and cheaper chemicals as you mentioned because pure animal fat is to expensive in large quantities. Real soap made at home is purely animal fat/ tallow. And lye. You can add things like scents to your desire. But at the very basic level it’s only animal fat/ tallow and lye.
