My paternal grandparents where married in this church in 1935, my parents in San Sebastiano al Palatino church (dating back to X century) in 1964 and my husband and I in 1994 in Santa Costanza church dating back to V century, which originally was a roman imperial tomb. One of the bonuses of living in Rome….

I recently (just a couple of weeks ago) visited Rome and went to all four of the papal basilicas, and I thought St Mary Major was the most beautiful of them, as well.

This is a beautiful church. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Pope Francis visited this church, after he became Pope. I seem to remember a commentator stating Santa Maria Maggiore was the favorite church of Pope Francis. I could be wrong.
@AugustinianThomist21 күн бұрын
Probably true, he prays in the chapel in Santa Maria Maggiore with the icon of Mary every time before he sets off on a foreign trip and when he gets back. It was also the first place he prayed as pontiff and he has a tomb prepared for himself in it as well.

@@AugustinianThomistreally? I thought every pope would be buried in St. Peter’s. I know some popes has been buried in other churches (St Laurence, I believe here and St. Paul), but I thought the modern popes would be buried in St. Peter’s as most of them would.

The first time I visited, it was without any Pope present. The 2nd time, John Paul II was there.... Before he arrived, the sun aligned with the dome opening and illuminated the gold cross..!! Then they turned on the 'Extra Lights' that are not working when the Pope's not in the house... Oh MY... The lighting levels increase incredibly and the details and colors are AMAZING..!!

Thanks for putting this together. I visited the forum for the first time in February and I never even knew it existed, so I was very excited when the tour took us through there and I realized i was literally in the heart of ancient Rome. But even then it was hard to picture what everything would have looked like, and this video helps a lot with showing me what I was looking at earlier this year.

Silly hype. St Peter”s in Rome is obviously the most important church in Christendom.
@minui8758Ай бұрын
It’s also canonically not. St Peters isn’t an archbasilica but only a major one and its dedication is only an optional memoria shared with St Paul Outside the Walls while St John’s gets a compulsory feast. It’s obviously where your coming from to anyone whose been there but you are technically wrong

About the removal of bronze on all ancient temples of Rome in order to give the material for those huge baldachin columns (this is how the Pantheon has lost its magnificent frontal inscription that had survived since antiquity)… The Romans at that time criticized it and said, “Quod non fecerunt barbari, fecerunt Barberini” - “What the barbarians didn't do, the Barberini did” - referring to Pope Urban VIII who was from the Barberini family.

@minui8758Ай бұрын
It mentions quite a lot of Catholic rituals, literally the source of them. Bible reading in the presence of the faithful, bread and wine to remember and commune with Christ, the idea of the communion sacrifice, the use of incense, the use of sacred lamps, the idea of the tabernacle, the idea of reciting psalms as a kind of individual and collective dialogue with the Father… in fact you name name one thing in the liturgy and I’ll show you the scripture is a pretty good rule
