I love the really subtle but smart references made to modern Wicca and western ceremonial magic, alongside bits gleaned from what we know of actual Ancient Greek mystery cults. The sister blades are meant to evoke the athame (artavo) and boline, ritual knives that first appear in the Lesser Key of Solomon (before Gerald Gardner decided to place heavy emphasis on the Athame in his newly-formed Wicca because of his fascination with Indonesian Kris knives) The torches are meant to be wands, obviously (as well as referencing the whole “Hecate entering the underworld armed with a torch” story) There aren’t direct correlations to the pentacle and chalice in Melinoë’s armaments, the last two of the four Wiccan instruments (after Blade and Wand), though I could see an argument for the Skull representing either. But the Axe is of some pretty nifty provenance: it’s very specifically a double-bited axe ( a _Labrys_ ) a weapon-turned-symbol that (at least in Crete) was only ever associated with female goddesses. There’s some contentious etymology regarding its relation to the word “Labyrinth” which is pretty fascinating. But it also became a symbol in the modern era - of both the neopagan Goddess movement of the 70s, as well as lesbian feminism, both due to the Cretan association with feminine divinities. There’s so much more… the tarot cards, the incantations in rhyming couplets, the way Melinoë is depicted (including her safron robes, her “half-dead” interpretation, and her dualistic Nightmare aspect from the Dark Side hex)… it’s just all such reverent and clever reference while staunchly being its own thing, creating new interpretations of half-remembered mythologies and cultural practices. Supergiant is impeccable.

Exciting Update: After more research, I think it's possible the three bronze tablets I mention in this video are related to Neoplatonism, a popular belief system around the Mediterranean from about the 3rd-6th century CE. Look for more info about them on my upcoming video on Hecate. <3

Both Melinoe and Zagreus are often thought to be avatars of Dionysus. They adressed that as a prank in the first game, but I wonder if either Dio not being around is a sign of something more (plus his VA seems to voice Odysseus, so I guess he won't be in the game as the similarities are pretty clear)

I flipped out when I saw her. She’s so well done. And she and Zeus each have a duo boon where you have to sacrifice all your choices in the other’s boons in exchange for levels in theirs. It’s hilarious and such a perfect representation of their relationship told through a gameplay system.

@dominicgavito

Why is there a need to say that it shouldn't be political? Games are meant for the artists and developers to express whatever they want to, if they want to make a game "political" that's their choice and not up to you. Also having diversity isn't political lol, gay people do in fact exist.

@@dominicgavitoFor their sake I hope they cast out the people who love Aphrodite's design but slam Eve for having 40% nudity saying she's too sexualised and showing too much skin. And that they don't just commit reputation suicide. Like it or not, there's a difference between representation, and selling out to individuals who hate you and want your money by hiding behind something that causes arguments because it's easy to smoke and mirror by shouting racism and discrimination.
@dominicgavito
@dominicgavito 26 күн бұрын
@@thefiresworddragon927 I don't know a lot about Eve but I can say that Aphrodite's design fits her character well. She is the goddess of love and lust so her being nude makes complete sense from a Greek mythology standpoint. Eve I assume is more sexualised because they wanted her to be. And like it's one character, I don't totally get the backlash since it's fiction, characters can be as attractive or ugly as people want them to be

If anyone believe this story you’ve got to learn to think for yourself. She is spot on according to the known history. What I mean is that you are dumb for believing Zeus had intercourse with his daughter. Perhaps someone wrote that story at a point because they didn’t like the idea of other religions. Hasn’t that always been the history of the world.

Interestingly, Greek aristocrats seemed to love Achilles. I had a professor who exained that though Hector was respected, Achilles really was the favorite. Achilles wasn't self sacrificing, he was denied his warbride and he decided to bring the Greek war machine to its knees. That's a romantic idea, kind of like Ayn Rand's Atlas shrugged but less dense, easy to read, and full of beautiful similes. Nietzsche has great things to say about ancient greek thinking, stating that, "a modern person would shudder to understand how a greek experienced the Iliad." Also, his essay on the greek competition is great. I am starting to think Nietzsche is right, and that the author Homer is entirely beyond morality/ outside of modern platonic morality.

@@wolfsbanealphas617 or even look at the practices of warfare into the Peloponnesian war. Athens, famously in Thucydides, killed the men and children, and enslaved the women of a small island city state and told them, "We are doing.this because we are stronger and will not waste our time justifying our actions." You see that on both sides of the conflict. The mind of an ancient Greek and a modern person are quite different.
