OK I hope I am not hallucinating or losing my mind but I swore I took this cruise back in the 80's. For years I thought it was called the SS Hellenis, and no Google search yielded anything, until I decided to drop the "H". This popped up and this looked like the very same ship I was on. It went from Italy, to Sicily, to Greece, Haifa Isreal, Kusadasi Turkey, Alexandria Egypt: not in that order because I was a youngster and don't remember, the only thing I remember was being terrified that the cruise ship almost got stuck in port as they were preparing to close down due to assassination of ex-president Anwar Sadat in 1981. I must have been on that very last cruise because I read it got scrapped in Eleusis, Greece. Another very interesting note: I had NO idea this ship had Hawaii ties. I boarded the ship in Italy, cruised all over the Meditterranean without any idea (until today), that I was a passenger on a pretty famous ship (movies, song inspirations, etc).

She was truly THE most beautiful ship ever designed. She had lines that from certain angles were just so raked and elegant, simply beautiful, and yet you could catch her on certain views, looking fat, plump and almost squat. I had a woman for whom I worked, who sailed on her in the 30's. She said it was the most magnificent experience she ever had.. and she was just a young ballerina, entertaining on board!! <3 Never to been seen again on the seas...

Very lovely video... Does she qualify as the ship with the most funnel changes in her career?? 2 under NDL, and then 3-4 under CGT? She looked splendid with the low winged funnels in her refit, but Im sure they spewed soots on the decks. The final funnels, with the big caps made her look the part she grew into. A grand dame of the the Atlantic routes. She definitely was an indomitable ship... Sorry she was gone by the time I was born..
