I was 5 emigrating as a £5 Pom! In 1969. There were three deaths aboard the Southern Cross on that trip to the southern hemisphere, one an assault on a beach the second natural the other under ( allegedly) suspicious circumstances. The story was gambling and drink were involved. The next morning the ship circled back on itself in a search attempt for a suspected man overboard. ( unsuccessfully) According to my mother the American actor Forrest Tucker was enjoying an around the world tour aboard the Southern Cross. The gentleman’s wife assured her it wasn’t him and “ he gets mistaken for him a lot.”

I came to Australia in 1963 from new Zealand as a 5 month old baby as mum and dad did not have to buy a ticket for me I am now one of the first undocumented boat people and it still at 60 makes it hard to get government asistance

I sailed on her sporadically from January 1963 for several voyages as one of the Purser's staff. I met my wife a year later on her when she was one of the two Ship's Nurses serving with Dr. Danny Morgan. I also sailed on Southern Cross too. Wonderful ships; wonderful days.

We went aboard her for a look around when she was berthed at the Peir Head in Liverpool in 1971 (I think) prior to going on a cruise around the Baltic. Sadly the cruise was cancelled.

Gorgeous, Gorgeous ship , the unique color scheme superb, the Union Castle line ships also sported a magnificent paint scheme, oh to be back in the sixties .

I sailed on NS as a passenger 4 times in the 1970's. Very happy memories, there was so much open deck space. 😀 Does anyone remember Erni, barman in the Tavern or Doreen Crawley, the very posh social hostess ? I also wonder what happened to Andy Betts, one of the singers on board ?

I was a steward on her in 1962/3 and her sister in 1963. My last ships before settling in Australia. Great memories.

Que por negocios quitaron los inigualables y cómodos buses eléctricos, y nos quitaron el don de ser verdaderamente cachacos, gente culta elegante". ¡ Qjo ! estoy hablando de mecanicos, fuerza de motores de autos y trolebus, no de lo que usted se imagina. Deberían estar en el cosmos con una bombona de oxígeno por un gugle de tiempo, esto lo escribo para que no entiendan. Es todo gracias.

Spent a happy 3 months on her as an engineer cadet in 1971 and we cruised from Soton to the Med and back. I remember we had big problems with boilers but I remember the time fondly.

I was an Electrical Engineer on it, took it to Taiwan to be scrapped, loved this ship. RIP.

sailed on her in 2003 (as the ocean breeze) on the port everglades to Nassau short break cruise and the grand old lady was just wonderful in her slightly faded charm with a lovely crew. i will never forget her is saddens me that she was sent to her end not long after. the modern floating hotels are just not the same!

I remember her as an empress, also in her SS. guise, which was not a success. I was a steward on the Southern Cross & Northern Star in 1962 - 1964. Northern Star was unfortunate and scrapped too early. 13 years?
