The festival Bun Bang Fai (Thai ประเพณีบุญบั้งไฟ brapheni bun bang fai, rocket festival) is an annual event held in Laos and in the northeast of Thailand, the Isaan, for the Tam bun, that is, the creation of merit in the Buddhist faith. The largest festival of this kind is held in Yasothon. The actual term for rocket is Jaruat (จรวด), the Bang Fai (บั้งไฟ) are actual enlarged Silvestra rockets, but filled with black powder. The black powder is placed either in a tube made of bamboo, or nowadays usually in one made of PVC, which then has a standard diameter and is easier to fill. The rules of the rocket competition require that the competitor must make his rocket launchable himself. Bamboo canes can be tied together with climbing plants to make longer tubes. The rocket is ignited by a fuse or electric ignition. There are different sizes of rockets, each competing against the other in different competitions: the small ones are called bang Fai Noi (บั้งไฟน้อย). The larger ones are denoted by the numbers for 10,000 (หมื่น muen), 100,000 (แสน saen) and 1,000,000 (ล้าน lan). The largest missiles are not only very expensive, but also very dangerous. They are about 9 meters long and contain about 120 kg of black powder. They can reach heights of several kilometers and fly for long distances, but they can also go off through the crowd of spectators. The rockets are judged by the height they reach, the distance of impact and the beauty of the smoke trail.
