Plays for August: Twilight Inscription - wrapping up our multiple plays from the previous month Nova Roma - we admire the design, but just didn't have fun. It's on the sell pile. Everdell Farshore - we enjoyed it, although it's a bit light for our tastes. I'll probably keep it around to play with the kids when they're a bit older, but not one I'm eager to get back to the table quickly. Rolling Realms - fun filler Arcs - we really enjoyed the base game at 2 players. Our first try at the campaign didn't go so well. We didn't even bother finishing the final act, because it didn't seem like it was going to be fun to play out the way things had gone. The campaign has so much variability that I think it's going to be an uneven experience, sometimes working out and creating cool stories, other times being a little bit boring. I suspect part of us not enjoying it was a first play issue, and I also suspect it would be better at 3 or 4. The campaign adds a TON of extra rules and complexity over the base game, and I'm not sure it's adds enough fun for all that to be worth it (especially at 2 players). A lot of the extra stuff, while technically working at 2 players, felt very out of place at that player count. Best of the month - Arcs base game

Cool! Arcs sounds awesome! I have been interested in Farshore for some time. Wonder if I would like it.

Seems as though correlation isn't causation and yellow is not as unbalanced in all plays of "It's a wonderful world" as it has seemed in some of mine. Best play of the month for me was Terraforming Mars. Was unable to get a multiplayer game due to a busy month, but was finally able to give it some solo play. After setup it's a pretty quick game when you really know what you're doing. Very happy that I didn't ruin the game of Barcelona with my slow play.

Carcassonne is a good pick and has more depth than most people realize. I also used to feel like roads were underpowered in base Carcassonne but as I played more, I learned to utilize them better. Now I feel like roads shouldn't be ignored. *But also,* you can do a lot with a road tile. You can place a farmer on it. You can make an enemy structure harder (or impossible) to finish. You can surround your monasteries. You can even use it to preemptively protect your cities, but that's a more advanced consideration that would probably require some explanation. All in all, I think the balance is very good in base Carcassonne which is probably my favorite way to play the game. I don't like the 3-tile-hand variant either. I like playing with probabilities and making the best move I can with the tile I'm given. It's part of what I like about the game. Oh, I should probably mention that I play Carcassonne mostly as a 2-player game.

Fun list! I love Underwater Cities. I haven't done a ranking in a long time, but I wouldn't be surprised if it landed in my top 10. I've only played Hive a few times, and my kids have since misplaced some of the pieces, haha. Definitely one I'd like to play some more to get a better grasp of it. Terra Nova is one I need to try. I'm a huge fan of Gaia Project and Age of Innovation. Having a similar experience in a quicker play time sounds very appealing for some week night gaming. I really enjoy Beyond the Sun, but don't get it played nearly as much as I'd like to. I'm looking forward to Beyond the Horizon.

Wow! No one ever mentions Tournay. It's a great game... but I don't get to play it often because it is so symbol heavy, it makes it hard to teach new players. I've really grown an appreciation for Carcassonne lately. I had only played it once years ago before getting into the hobby. I recently started playing it more regularly and have been really enjoying it. I have both the Castle and City versions and like the restrictive nature of having a border. Now I am looking for some of the other off shoots like Over Hill and Dale.

Very unique list! You definitely need the right kind of group for heavy 3-4 hour games like terra mystica, but when you have a group that enjoys those games they are the absolute best!. I've been curious about Hive for a while and might try to find a way to play it soon.

Mostly because I have been thinking about getting first journey for daughter who is about to turn 6. I am also curious to hear more about your MTG experience, was there a particular format that you were playing? Maybe I can have the two of you over sometime for a go with a couple decks.

Plays for July: Lost Ruins of Arnak - We played through the cooperative campaign from Missing Expedition, which was fantastic. Expeditions - I almost sold this game, but ended up keeping it to try out the Gears of Corruption expansion. It was fun. The expansion fixed all of the issues I had with the base game. Fort - played with the Cats and Dogs expansion, which we hadn't played before. It's a fun addition, but certainly not essential. Heat - played several plays with various different maps, and with the garage module. Fun game. We played with the rival cars, but they often ended up nowhere near us. I suspect it would be a lot more fun with more players. We enjoy it, but I am surprised it's in the top 100. Twilight Inscription - played several games, hadn't played before. We really enjoyed it. Your faction has a very meaningful effect on what you're doing, which gives some nice variability. It's up there with Hadrian's wall for me for heavy "verb and writes". Favourite of the month - Lost Ruins of Arnak easily. Such a fantastic game, and each expansion has just made it even better.

Our family plays Namiji regularly. It works well as lighter fare to bring folks together for an hour and enjoy conversation, snacks and drinks. On my end, I’ve had Fateforge:Chronicles of Kaan set up on the gaming table and I’ve run through a handful of scenarios. Fun so far. 👍🏻 And agreed re: Ticket to Ride. It doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not and consistently delivers a fun time. We enjoy the Nordic Countries version - especially around Christmas.

Two most recent games I played were both new to me. Kingdom Builder and Ark Nova I enjoy what you’re doing in KB, it’s simple with a decent amount of strategy. Though it plays almost too quickly at two player, and will likely hit its stride at 3-4. Excited to try at a higher player count Ark Nova has been a blast. I can see some DNA of TFM present, mostly in the card play and tile placement. The action selection and upgrading is interesting. It felt long even at two, but that’s not really a drawback for us. Some certain things could use work but overall great
