Not as good as the 1978 version, which is the one most faithful to the John Buchan novel.

I consider this to be the weakest adaptation of John Buchan's incredible novel but Hannay's journey to Scotland has been very well filmed on the Bo'Ness and Kinneil Railway.

I have only seen the 1978 version and really enjoyed it. I wasn't aware of the 2008 version but I'm definitely interested in sitting back with a cup of tea and watching this movie on this cold fall night.

I enjoyed this take on the story. I've seen the 1935, 1959, 1978 versions and now this one. The later versions may be more faithful to the book, but none are as entertaining as the Hitchcock film .

Well this Richard Hannay is cuter but the apartment is not as elegant and well-decorated as the 1978 movie considering that this Richard Hannay actually has a housekeeper and the one from the 1978 version didn't even have one. But clearly this is a modern version and doesn't depict at all how people in 191X's era speaks like how the 1978's version does. Nevertheless this Richard Hannay is cute enough for me to continue watching. Just wish his flat can be decorated better.

Our hero, Mr. Hannah discovers that Victoria works for the English Secret Service. Here all the double crosses are sorted out. Our hero recalls that the murdered British Agent left a major clue at breakfast. By using honey, murdered agent Scutter spells out 39 Steps on the last page of the code book. Also in the course of the discussion with the Commander of the Secret Service (Victoria's boss), Victoria is convinced by the information that her Uncle is a traitor to England. At long last the plot turns the corner to allow the fugitives to hunt down the traitors (the professor & Victoria's Uncle) as well as the German spies.

Our hero, who already answered Victoria's inquiry that he's single, warmly declares his admiration for her in front of a fire place. Not lost on the viewer is the light from the fire that makes the hero's gold jacket gleam during the (long awaited) repeated kisses. The hero enlists Victoria's brother, Harry, to drive the car.

After a brief rest, the two heroes are on a bike ride to her (female fugitive's) home as they flee the German spies once again. Luv the fire place scene where both munch on sandwiches.

Both fugitives escape the dungeon of the Castle owned by a Professor who has the weapons to damage the English Navy. The explosion leaves both with skin burns which makes to run to the road more difficult. Both are determined to find the code book written by the British Agent Scutter which was tossed onto the shoulder of a road.

As the Hero pretends to be a candidate for the British Parliament to evade capture, a co-fugitive (by hitting a policeman) join him. In the auto race, the contrast of the co-fugitive not believing the hero (slow in understanding) against the fast pace of the race is not lost on the viewer. Life too races forward as the participants in a drama connect the dots slowly.

Our hero is now hunted not only by the native police of Scotland, but by the German spies who want the code book of the British Agent. My mouth is getting moist from following the run to escape capture.

Hmmm ... a member of the "upper class" who knows how to make breakfast? Sure he was in a war in "uncivilised" territory but he probably didnt have to cook there and should have a housekeeper or such here in his flat.

Thank you so much for loading this film. I wasn't aware of it as I live abroad and miss out on all this British stuff. Very different from the Robert Donat version, which I own on DVD as it is one of my favourite films. I fell in love with Mr Donat and now I adore Mr Penry-Jones too. That man is so handsome I swear if you put him in a sack he'd still be the most dapper chap around. I haven't read the book so have no idea which is more true to the story, so perhaps I should get round to it.
