I'd like to share as common as it may be seem, Otto is a German name not Turkish. It been a long tradition of naming Turks with demeaning name by European historians. Turks at the beginning called them Osmanogullari, has nothing to do with Otto name. its like calling Mark, Margaret. later on changed their "Official correspondence title" to Devlet-i Aliye which used in Sultanate. Turks never used the Empire word. After conquering Constantinople, they kept the city name as original and Mehmet declared himself as 'Sultanate of Rome' as well. Which was the end of East Roman Empire, not Byzantium.

This video made me realize it's been 4 years already since covid breakout and 2022 mutual flights ban between Russia and the West. As a moscovite, i actually got really used to almost complete absence of European and American tourists in the streets. And now, that i've started to notice them every now and then, i'm being torn between my desire for economy to prosper from more tourists and for tourists to prosper emotionally and intellectually from visiting a new country on one hand, and the fact that the city without tourists is so much cleaner, quiter, and in general more comfortable to live in on the other hand. I'm not judging anyone of course and i welcome everyone from whatever country they are from, it's just Moscow is a pretty dence city and there's a certain limit of people it can effectively 'handle'... Anyway, great video, kind of nostalgic even! And it's a good idea to upload it now. I've come across a couple of prominent travel vlogers breaking this ice recently. I'm sure your video is going to contribute to this healthy trend.

Fellow KZbinr here. If you separate politics from Russian life and nature, its true that Russia itself is a very interesting place. Unfortunately, as a citizen of Russia, my relatives have been subject to countless disasters - revolution, Stalin, wars, 90s. Our money has been stolen and confiscated multiple times, hence the poverty that Soviet citizens lived in. Once you live through that, it's not that much fun anymore.

4:24 together with Vladimir it was a second center of the very same princedom, which included the village of Moscow and was known as Vladimir-Suzdal princedom. At some point this princedom inherited position of the seat of Grand Duke from Kiev and for a long time this title held symbolic importance. For short time it was a center of the region and the city and its citizens were the backbone of Moscow's Grand Dukes rise to power. Btw many citizens of ancient Kiev fled to these lands, when Kiev was razed to the ground by invading Mongols. 4:32 true, but not entirely. It is a very specific word for specific fortress - a fortified city center, it's most ancient and protected part. Usually city's ruler resided there and his administrative apparatus situated there also. I can present two examples. In the city of Pskov, which in its heyday had three layers of walls(and one separate wall across the river) only the innermost hailed as kremlin. And only one wich I'm aware of with a personal name - "the Krom"(it's essentially an even older version of the same word - kremlin). In the city of Voronezh there is no kremlin, although it is started as a standalone fortress, but it is called "fortress", not "kremlin". 8:56 it's not "sweetened" with honey. Honey is a base for this drink, its sugars are what yeast is using in fermenting process. 17:40 it was not Stalin's personal decision, it was a decision of Politburo. To add a little context - the start of the 20th century was one of the times in humanity's history when there was a tremendous enthusiasm about science, and prospects, which it brings, especially in the Soviet Union. Studying Lenin's - presumably - genius brain was considered an important matter. Also, there were talks at that time, that in the near future science will make resurrection possible, so preserving Lenin's body made avenue for that possibility. On more down-to-Earth level there were throngs of people, who were coming to see Lenin off from all around the country and due to limited means of transport it required them quite some time to get to Moscow, so preserving the body made sense in that regard too.

24:42 it's The Arsenal. 24:59 no, this is a public building "State Conventions Palace", although Communist Party's conventions were held there most of the time it was(and is) used for concerts, theater plays, ballet and other performances. 25:13 no, that's Russian State crest. It was first used at the times of Ivan the Third, who, ofc, was of Rurikids direct male line. Romanoffs tended to use state crest as their personal, so it may have caused some misunderstandings along the line. Their own crest was officiated in 19th century as red standing gryffin with sword and shield, but their earliest crest was most likely a black Prussian eagle with gryffin and lion as secondary symbols. Russian heraldry had't had the same level of unification and order as west European one, so some families kind of invented a "historical" crest for themselves from different sources, when they discovered a neeed in one. In Russia, although family crests were not unknown or unused nobles inclined more towards inventing and using personal crests as far as I know.
