Stoppd watching the moment he said The Dark Knight motif doesn’t develop or the score doesn’t tell a story. Completely ignorant take on that score & modern film music in general.

There's 12 minutes I won't get back. Stick to "Art of the Score" and please don't do another Zimmer episode. Some Goldsmith, Goldenthal, Horner, Shore, Newton-Howard would be nice... or Hell just do all John Williams.

Williams once commented that Lucas wanted him to create a score of excerpts from orchestral scores of Bruckner and Mahler. Thankfully, John talked him out of that idea.

The absolutely amazing thing is that it had such a far reach, that the Jugoslavian band Videosex made a song called Detektivska Priča in 1984 which even had this theme in it! Also Handsome Boy Modeling School's 2023 How Does It Feel has the same theme in it .

This is the reason why the soundtrack of the Social Network is so memorable, so good, and so innovative. It's like nothing that has ever come before. But like everything that has since come after (also from Reznor and Ross themselves).

11:23 "no huge melody to draw you in"... while in the background we hear Zimmer's huge melody for that scene. This is a common misunderstanding with Zimmer. People think his music has no melody, although the exact opposite is the truth. He is the king in movie themes because his melodies are simply the best and more epic out there. Without his melodies, his percussion and drums wouldn't make him famous. F.e. that scene of man of steel is so epic, because of that melody. Without that melody and with only all the other elements of that theme, this scene would be almost nothing.

I've been enjoying an analysis of the scores for season one and two of _Star Trek: TOS._ They hired composers to do about 8 episodes a season, whose cues or themes were re-used throughout the season where appropriate. They hired a couple more to do pick-ups or finish some late-season episodes, where they didn't have cues they could use. A couple composers were only hired for one episode and their compositions were lacking, which is why they probably didn't return. www.youtube.com/@davidpage9355/videos

The same was true for baroque composers like for example Vivaldi or Bach. Vivaldi used often his own ideas in different concertos, Bach used Vivaldi's melodies which he liked, also there was a time when he needed to write one cantata a week to perform it every sunday having a lot of other work to do as well, so sometimes he has used the same music from his other works putting different words under. Temp music of the other time ;) Tey just had so much composing work to do to fulfill expectations of their employers...

I think that the decline in musical literacy amongs the people making the decisions on what the music should sound like (therefore giving the composers less eclectic temp tracks to work with) is the problem. I believe Danny Eldman, John Powell, etc. discuss this in a round table. Temp tracks have gotten worse, so I think the original video was more correct than this one. Still an interesting perspective though!

I don’t get the notion that the Avengers movie don’t have “memorable” music. Alan Silvestri’s scores are classical Hollywood orchestra, with plenty of melodies and themes. I remember loving Endgame’s reuse of various themes from previous films. Plenty of the Marvel movies scores are likely built on VSTs (due to the ludicrous schedule of those productions), but it seems dishonest to dismiss the music of the Avengers movies themselves, which are basically the tent pole Marvel movies. Also, it’s probably worth leaving the disunion of whether the Avengers theme is memorable up to the people who watched the movies when they were kids. Y’know, like how we watched Star Wars lol
