The boat was constructed in 1904 at the shipyard of the Freij brothers in Nieuwe Pekela. In 1905, it received the name "Luctor et Emergo" and was owned by P. Bult from Wildervank. Given its location, it likely transported peat for the EMV (Electric Company Veenkoloniën) (try searching "Veendammer Turfcentrale" for details). On March 3, 1927, Jan Middel from Groningen acquired the boat in Onderdendam. At that time, it was called Emanuel. To finance the purchase, he needed a mortgage, and the boat was subsequently branded "34BWinsch1927" ("B" stands for "Binnenvaart," or inland navigation, in Winschoten). On June 14, 1941, Anthonie Beuker from Groningen took ownership of the vessel and renamed it "Hoop op Welvaart." On March 17, 1947, the boat was legally seized by a notary (noted as 3.23) and was reportedly abandoned, becoming known as a "ghost ship." (Spookschip) It seems that after 1947, the boat was no longer economically viable for transporting goods. This was likely due to a combination of factors: the vessel had become outdated, and there was growing competition from modern transportation methods such as trucks and railroads. Additionally, changes in canal infrastructure played a significant role. Some canals were widened to accommodate larger, more modern vessels, while others were closed or rerouted. For instance, if you look at Google Maps near Winschoterdiep by Sappemeer Hoogezand, you’ll notice that the Hoofdstraat was once part of the old Winschoterdiep canal. the new Winschoterdiep runs past Hoogezand

Very interesting & educational. From Holland to London, not always easy, esp with tides (plus uncertainties etc) and good use of charting. Well Done

The rust shouldn't come back with the extra coat of paint on, no. It was so rusty so it's great to have it clean now. Yes, looking forward to the finish and chipping away!

Sorry for the loss of your Nan ❤ It's so great to see you working on the boat again. But as I remember from my own life before I retired, -there are always things to be done, appointments and every day life really. Impressed with what you manage do when you have a tight schedule. As always, great fun to watch your vlog. Have a great week.

Good work on the ply, and thank you for including us in your thought processes on all the intricacies of the wires, the switchplates, window heads etc. All us armchair DIYers often forget about all the thought and pre-work that has to take place before anything is fitted. I know you call it rambling (and, okay, it is sometimes!) but it has real value to us out here in youtube land. 3 yrs ago I bought my barge fully fitted as I had reached an age where I didn't think taking on a refit was sensible. So I enjoy your work vicariously from my saloon on the Canal du Midi! Keep it up Beth, and sorry about your Gran. As you said, at 100 it was her time.

Hi Beth, great workwomanship on the ply you're doing, very impressed how you did your window cut outs, not easy to do, I noticed the big supply of ply you have god thatis a lot of money ply is so expensive, the self tapping screws are great aren't they, looking forward to your next one. Love the outtakes, I hope your grandma lies in peace, she will be with the angels now looking over you.🙂

Great seeing the footage going up to the yard. I noticed a couple of buoys near the Brentford Ait. Are they demarking the lanes or just where its its the deepest part of the channel because of how much it changes with the tide?
@TillerQueen2 ай бұрын
The red can is the port marker (when you're going upstream) and denotes the edge of the navigable channel so you should keep to starboard of it when going up river and to port when going down river. On the other side there are green cones which are the other side of the navigable channel. So as long as you stay between those you have enough water.
