This movie is a masterpiece, I also like to theorize that everything really was just a dream, that drop of sweat could have been created by Quaid's subconscious, making it part of his fantasy, after that the catastrophe of events followed and the improvised simulation After that, although everything the doctor said ended up being true, it is as if the simulation continued to be programmed to always have the same results, or maybe this is all part of the simulation without necessarily his wife or the doctor being involved.

I listened to the audio commentary for this scene on dvd, and Arnold said Sharon Stone broke his finger with that kick during rehearsals of the scene.

I wished I had seen this on the big screen back then..the ending sequence must have been awesome to see when Quaid and Melina look out over Mars as the oxygen released transforms the atmosphere of the planet into the equivalent of Earth.

In truth, I think the main reason this scene is so effective is that both possibilities seem equally bizarre, surreal, and (arguably) implausible. Yeah, I agree that having the entire government being in on a conspiracy against you, implanting memories of being a construction worker with a hot wife to keep you from your mission, only to THEN have everyone trying to kill you once they think you've regained your memories, kinda does sound like a figment of a really bored person's imagination. And his experiences all (or at least mostly) seem consistent with the parameters of the Recall program (as mentioned by the doctor in THIS scene), including the events of the rest of the film AFTER this scene. But if it was a memory implant malfunction, does the doctor really have no better way to wake him up than to appear in his own dream? How would taking a pill WITHIN HIS OWN DREAM actually help? It's only because of the bizzare, surreal nature of the film's universe that either possibility seems believable to me.
