Amateur radio has two sides. Communication and technical development. Construction has become less possible these days but there is always much that can be done. In a world where Wats App text and images from Malaysia gets interrupted by calls from Nepal for free it's hard to excite young people with SSB. Conference calls are more exciting than nets. So an easy common way into digital is important.

THE WORST INVESTMENT I ever made in an amplifier.. Is the ACOM 2020S amplifier truly a worthwhile investment? Having personally acquired one, I'm inclined to express reservations regarding its value for the money spent. Recently, I opted to purchase an alternative amplifier from a different brand as a backup, featuring a comparable topology to the ACOM 2020S. Surprisingly, the performance of this alternative amplifier matches, and in certain frequency bands, even surpasses that of the 2020S. Remarkably, I acquired the alternative amplifier at a cost less than half of the ACOM 2020S, leading me to question the overall justification for the premium price associated with the ACOM model. ACOM consistently fails to prioritize customer feedback and actively listen to their concerns. As an owner of two additional ACOM models, I must express my disappointment, as this particular product stands out as the poorest in their lineup. too many restrictions on the 2020S...

Thanks for the info. I do wish the IC-905 was cheaper. It would also be nice if they had a multi-band antenna instead of needing $350 for each band's antenna. Also, really wish they had the 33cm and 1.25cm bands since no one offers those anymore. Good opportunity for Kenwood, Yaesu and Alinco to step up! Greetings and 73 from Cocoa Beach, Florida KI1Y.

Love this! I just purchased from a fellow ham, a beautiful, mint Acom 1000. Originally, he ordered back in 2014 and still operating to full output on the original 4CX800a (it came with 2 new spares still in their boxes!). As a net controller 4 evenings a week, it has been a true work horse in my station. The tuning is quick and simple, and this replaced my Ameritron 811 equipped with 572-B trio. Could not be happier . 😊

As a very new M7 (M7VQW), I was greatly encouraged and informed by this discussion. Lovely to see that the top brass at RSGB fondly remember their first steps into the hobby and still radiate that enthusiasm for the newbie operators. I'm already intrigued enough to have started studying for the intermediate licence.( Thank you to GM6DX for his excellent resources)

I recall the first time I used a spectrum analyser and VNA (Vector Network Analyser) and they from memory brand new Marconi £50k and HP unit costing £100k in 1990s money. Today you can buy a spectrum analyser and a set of attenuator pads for a few hundred pounds and it will give reasonable results of the transmitters output to see if everything meets the requirements. So life has moved on and there is no reason why a radio amateur cannot check the output. Many of the technical restrictions of the past have fallen away.

Does anyone know what the % pass mark is for merit for the Full licence. For distinction I believe it is 85%.
@johnclarke2997 Жыл бұрын
I can just recall the old City and Guilds system was 70% and above for distinction, 60 - 69% for merit and 40 - 59% for pass. But my memory has it that pass was the highest grade which could be achieved in the old amateur radio exam. Today I have no idea, don't bother keeping up. Anyway I'm nearing my 30 years as a radio amateur.

An excellent chat, but not what I was expecting based on the title of the video. I was expecting a discussion about the licence changes; but there was a lot of off-topic conversation which, whilst nice to see, wasn't what you're selling with the title! A few audio issues too, which meant that at times people were fading into silence. Good work, but a few things to tighten up on to make it really great work!

Why won't the RSGB advocate for 8M / 40MHz , It is not more of the same There are more jurisdictions obtaining access, currently around 8, most recently "ON" We have "EI" on our doorstep/border with access

I don't mind RSLs as long as they are compulsory for everyone. I am ok with the English being forced to use an E RSL.

Hi Mark, from what I've read from the (very long) document, England use of RSL will be optional. 73 Colin
@markjordan4593 Жыл бұрын
@@Icqpodcast Yes, I have read the document regarding RSLs and understand. It was mentioned in the video about competitions, which is why the RSGB forced OFCOM's hand in the 2014 consultation. I am English living in Wales and being forced to use an RSL, when England's full licence holders don't have to, really annoys me. The RSGB, who's membership is mainly English over 60s, basically stopped voluntary RSLs in 2014.
