You can't just protest. It doesn't work without collective organizational power. There has to be something behind the protests to make a difference. You have to build local political coalitions that have the organizing power to influence large amounts of people in your communities. You have to go door to door and talk to people that have a history of helping others. I don't know how to find lists of people to talk to in my community. Instead of having lists of addresses, I just get a clipboard and wear a tie. I walk around with printed forms that look official. I just tell people that I am there to ask them "What do you want the government to do?" and then I listen. If they bring up adjacent issues I try to broach the subjects that I feel very strongly about. If they are receptive, I tell them why I feel the way I do. A lot of times people invite me inside for a glass of lemonade or iced tea because I live in the rural south. I've gotten cursed at. I've even had people threaten me with a gun. They apologized once they figured out that I was just in the area to spread the word about helping people, like war crimes victims. It's extremely beneficial to find community leaders who genuinely work to help people living in poverty meet their basic human needs. They will help introduce you to their people and you will have the opportunity to reach a larger group of people.
