It is a terrible tutorial. You don't show what keystrokes you are making so I can't follow, and even in the blog you still don't explain how you are making the area black and why you just can't use a the rectangle tool.

The basic idea here is that you're taking colours that aren't white and making them darker. So all you have to do for darker clothing is to make your darker colours lighter. In the levels adjustment, instead of bringing the black slider to the right you need to bring the white slider to the left. Another way to do this is by not making an adjustment layer. Just take the layer you copied, set the blending mode to multiply or linear burn, and then making one or two copies of it. So, to do that opposite, you set the blending mode to screen, I think, or something similar.
