I wish we could get a drift launch video where it isn’t a perfect sandy beach. How about walking through the trees with your lines on the handles, unspooling in deep water, with no beach. At launch sites with sandy beaches there easy options to anchor or self launch off sand

I thought you grab one of the Front Lines.... Instead of the Back line... Is any difference ????
@sylvaindubost1487
@sylvaindubost1487 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Aldo, sorry for late reply. Why do it more complicated when you can keep it simple? When you flip the kite the back line is just there, easy to grab. The front line is not. You would have to grab the briddle and pull it to get to the front line. Then, if you do that with a front line, the kite will probably go on his back, catching more wind, creating more drag so more tension on the front line you are using making everything more difficult. Using a back line to kill the kite works as good as a front line. If you have the OS (oh shit) system on your control bar system , use it, you'll see. If the safety line is connected to one of the front line on the control bar system and not one of the back line, it is because it is more practical. You don't want your leash connected to one side of the bar. Hope you are convinced Sylvain

@@sylvaindubost1487 hello Sylvain, and thank You for your response, but I think that in high Winds, is safer to use the front line, and the kite will drift at 45 degrees, not catching more wind and flapping like thr back line , some kites don’t hold the water and also “Cores” You put water on top, and they lift the leading edge 😱😩 !!!

In light wind you might get away with that. I'm not sure it would be any good with decent wind and on shore.
@sylvaindubost1487
@sylvaindubost1487 5 жыл бұрын
Hi R, I have done it many times in strong wind and it works well! Try it in light wind first to build your confidence and to get used to it. What could happen anyway, you are not hooked. If something goes wrong, the chicken loop will be pulled from your hand and the leash will kill the kite. Really, all you have to watch are your lines staying downwind from you and to not get tangled with your bar. This technique is the safest i know and with no risk to dommage your kite.
@scottobridge6141

@@sylvaindubost1487 what could go wrong you ask? Alot is the response. There are countless ways your lines could tangle in this scenario. Anything from seaweed, to a tiny stick, to simply all the slack in the lines as you back track against them then let it drift away. (creating an "s" in the lines) If they tangle in a way that allows the kite to power up and possibly loop, you're in for some potentially lethal chaos. Being drug by your leash is no less threatening than the CL, and neither safety is easy to find as sand and h2o are being driven into your face. Im glad youve been successful so far, but keep vigilant. I dont mean to be rude but simply want to point out to newbies that this is far from safe except in the lightest of conditions. There are safer methods if you look into it!

Hi Scott, sorry didn't see your reply earlier. Yes seaweed, shells, wood stick, rubbish, anything that can get tangled in your lines is not good for this method so stay away from these. Yes, don't let the lines go slack in the water. The only way they could go slack is if you do that in a place where there is a lot of current. When the speed of the water is nearly as strong as the speed of the wind ( not a good idea to kitesurf there anyway). Don't use this method there. Your lines could go slack too if you walk back to your kite as it is drifting in the water. That because there is something caught in your lines ( a shell for example). If you need to walk back in your lines, you need to walk back to your kite following the back line in your hand, walk back to the beach, and start all over again. When lines get slack, there is a risk they make a knot. In this method, you walk upwind in the water, lines following you, not slack. When you let the kite drift, you can still walk upwind. Then you'll be sure the lines won't get slack. What is your safest method anyway?

Thank you Thomas. No i didn't forget to insert the donkey dick into the hook. I am using a KRS Mystic spreaderbar. It has a mouse trap to keep the chicken loop in, no need of donkey dick. Here is the link www.mysticboarding.com/products/wind/bags-more/technical-accessories/krs-safety-spreaderbar/

at spots with a lot of seaweed that would be fatal lol

Hi. When the kite finish to drift in the water, if a bit of seeweed is caught in your lines, and lines are stucked together. A way to get rid of it is to take the chicken loop in one hand, the bar in the other hand, move the bar up and down on the depower line and give it a good shake, that will do the trick to separate the lines. Now, if there is too much seaweed in the water, you will notice it straigh away as you walk in the water with the lines following you. In this case, don't use this methode. Come back to the beach and wait for a friend or use an other self launch methode of mine, Unhooked Self Launch kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3vVfnaYd6eqi7c. Even with a lot of seaweed, nothing will be fatal. You are not hooked in. If the kite do something unpredictable, you will let go, the leash will pull the safety line and kill the kite!

Does this work in stronger winds?
@sylvaindubost1487
@sylvaindubost1487 6 жыл бұрын
It works well when you have the right kite size for the wind condition (as you should be). So in strong wind, yes, with a smaller kite. When you get a strong gust, you can hold the front line with both hands, one hand being over the bar like seen in the video, but just for a second. Just try fly your kite unhooked in the water first, you'll see, it is not that difficult! Just be sure your safety line is working, and let go if it is pulling too much. It is not for beginners, as beginner, if the kite pull too much, might hook in, just because they are hook in all the time, when the point of this method is to stay unhooked until you are sure it is safe.

I like you the way you hold the back line in the water keeping friction to a minimum in your hand and keeping the kite from turning and launching prematurely. This is a good method for drift launching if one has room.
