I know the majority of these discussions are years old, but just leaving this here. When Natsume split from Marvelous, they *_only_* lost rights to the name "Harvest Moon" not the character names. The vast majority of the English names are just what you think they are. English versions of the Japanese original names. In rare cases, there's an original name here and there. But the few original ones still ended up in the remake, so that argument is entirely invalid as the reason why some of them changed here. As for the designs, Harvest Moon has had the same art designer since 1996. They would be fighting themselves for copyright if we use the logic of the comments. They more than likely thought a fresh coat of paint would help make the game stand out more. But in the long-term, yeah, that wasn't a smart idea. That is all there is to it.

I like the old art style better too, i don't like how the mayor look in the remake and as you all know I also dislike how Carter look. And oh yes i don't like they change Harris too, why Harris became so chubby?? And that weird mustache, i can't stand it. As for the girls, they removed Marie's bangs and decided to put the bangs to Karen, she is a tomboy and shouldn't have bangs i wonder what did the dev think, Popuri is also a downgrade, she was so cute in Back to Nature with her hair, now she looks like a kid and her hair now is different. Ann(Ran) and Ellie are fine though. And i don't like that they removed Kano the photographer in Mayor's house too

I like both versions for different reasons. But I like Duke, Manna and Jeff’s updates. Their old versions were always strange to me, like out of place. I sorta like the old Carter better too. Huang is a very welcome update to Won. New Basil is so adorable I wish he was a bachelor, step aside Anna!!! 😒 Also I forgot until I saw this how the sprites used to say “budum”.

I think they should make a new Back to Nature and redo all the characters! There are a few in the Friends one that I like better but most of the characters in back to nature seem to look better. And it would sure be nice to get back our greenhouse! Storage is something that never seems to be enough of! But if I had to choose between the 2 games my first pick would be Back to Nature!!!
