Karman Ergo S-125 - Terrible Design, Terrible Customer Support, Company doesn't stand by their product Although the wheelchair is light as advertised, it is poorly designed. I have had to repeatedly tighten almost every screw on the wheelchair and still it came apart within the first six months (which BTW is the length of their poor warranty). The hinge at the bottom of the chair where the seats folds lost the bolt that holds it together, and when my son's attendant was collapsing the chair, the seat frame got stuck under the plastic side guard of the wheelchair and it then broke the plastic guard when the chair was folded up. This then resulted in the plastic guard sticking out into the spokes on the wheel and bending the spokes, and making the wheelchair unusable as you could not rotate the wheels without the plastic guard completely locking up the wheel. There are at least 6 severely bent spokes as a result that will have to be replaced as well. I had to break to plastic guard off since it was riveted, not bolted, onto the frame. I returned the chair to the dealer, who told me Karman would not honor a warranty claim. They provided me the name of the customer service supervisor to whom I spoke attempting to get them to understand what had happened. She said they would have to contact the factory and get back to me. After more than five weeks, I find out from the dealer, with Karman not having the courtesy to inform me directly, that they still will not honor the warranty. If they weren’t going to honor the warranty, they could have told me within a day or two, ordered the parts for the chair to be repaired, and have it back to me quickly. Instead, this has resulted in my son being without his wheelchair for over 7 weeks, only to find out that they still have not even allowed the wheelchair to be returned to them for repair, and it is still broken, and they don’t have the parts on hand to make the repair anyway…The latest response from them is that they told me it would not be warranted because it is considered a normal wear and tear item - yet it is RIVETED to the frame, and so there is no way to be replaced by a consumer or even the dealer, so by design, it really is a part of the capital equipment, NOT a wear item that is expected to be replaced….Update: now they say they are going to repair the chair, but still have not said if I am going to get a bill from them or from the dealer. They promised an answer yesterday, but after two days I am still waiting to hear from them. Update: 9 days later, still waiting for their answer, still haven’t repaired the chair or returned it to me. Final Update 18 days later: I had to find out from the store that Kaman refused to honor the warranty claim and charged the store where I bought the chair $100 to replace a bunch of nuts and bolts and the plastic side panel. They did not even have the courtesy to call me again and tell me themselves. They did nothing to fix the broken spokes, and did not replace a bad wheel bearing on the left hand side of the chair. However, the store, Sherman Oaks Medical Supply, did not ask me to pay anything as they were embarrassed by the manufacturer’s behavior and understood that this was a valid warranty claim. The store handled everything right with me and would not accept my offered payment. In addition to the seat hinge pin falling out, I have lost one screw holding the armrest in place, I have lost one of the screws that holds the folding back hinge in place as well. Like I just mentioned, one of the two wheel bearings is worn out already after only 6 months, and we don’t even use the chair that much, so they must purchase low quality bearings. The spoke and bearing replacement and wheel straightening is costing me another $80 at a local bike shop. This wheelchair is really a piece of junk, and the assembly build quality control is terrible. We have had many other wheelchairs, and I have never had so many parts come loose. Karman does not use any lock washers anywhere on the chair or any Lock-tite glue to keep the nuts tight when the frame flexes. If you want a high quality wheelchair, find another brand, this one neither builds a quality product nor stands behind their product. They refused to even tell me the name of the company president so I could contact him directly, so I had to find it online. Although it sounds like you are doing business with an American company, this is a cheap Chinese manufacturer with no industry standard warranty and no customer service. Stay Away!!!
