Hi Viki De - sorry I don't check frequently. Dying a carpet works best with a quality carpet with higher real wool percentage. The more artificial the fibre the less likely it will soak up the dye. Since I used the rugs/carpets mostly for decoration/staging, it's more about the pricepoint and am happy if I come across a nice piece of 'leftover' quality carpet but a regular carpet works just as well. Binding the edges is expensive so that's why I usually stick to the shags.

I don't do this for a living and am happy if someone - young or old - gets inspired or finds some information 'How to...' if they are not very crafty or on a tight budget. I put many slideshows up so some of the kids and grandparents, who asked me about popular gifts could recreate them themselves and are suprised that some of them got way more views than I expected. :)

Hallo Cthulhu fhtagn - interessanter Ansatz und leider konnte ich das noch nicht probieren, da es leider meinen Lieblings-Teppichhändler nicht mehr gibt und es schwer ist, in der Nähe gute Teppich-Qualität zu bekommen. Da waren die günstigen Restposten immer unschlagbar. Ich hatte einige kleine Stücke - Türmattenformat - gekauft, die ich immer als Probestück bearbeiten konnte, aber mit regulärer Bleiche hat aus einem dunkel-anthrazit farbenem Teppich leider keine Farbe entfernen lassen und das aus einem Stück Teppich mit ca. 90% Wollanteil. Ich fände einen schwarzen/ dunklen Teppich mit helleren Mustern sehr interessant und hätte das gerne probiert. Sollte ich eine neue Quelle auftun, wo ich super Teppichqualität (als Reststück) für 10 bis 30 Euro bekomme, mit denen ich experimentieren kann, werde ich es ausprobieren, aber 200 Euro aufwärts für ein Teppichstück groß genug, um verschiedenes auszuprobieren, ist mir zu teuer.

Hi Ashlyn, I buy left-overs of high-quality carpet from the decorator store. For the shags I used carpet with about 70% wool so the fibres will absorbe the creme. I usually get some doormat-sized pieces first to try them out. If they are already impregnated or have little wool in them they don't work. Same with curtains - if they are Polyester or any other artificial fibre only, it's hard or impossible to dye them. Hope that helps :)

Der Beni Ourain aus einem anderen Tutorial liegt in meinem Schlafzimmer und ich laufe jeden Tag drüber, mindestens zwei Mal mit - zugegeben nicht sehr schmutzigen - Schuhen, und er hat immer noch das schöne Creme. Liegt aber auch sehr an der Qualität des Teppichs (ARO). Der große bunte mit Kleksen aus dem 'Kinderzimmer' liegt seit einigen Monaten im Bügelzimmer im Keller und sieht auch noch gut aus. Die beiden Teppiche aus dem Video habe ich weggegeben und weiß nicht, ob sie noch leben, da sie in Musterwohnungen oftmals im Eingangsbereich liegen und in Wintermonaten nach vielen Dreckschuhen, die darüber gegangen sind, entsorgt werden oder es hat sie jemand gekauft/ einfach mitgenommen, was bei Accessoires leider häufig vorkommt, daher werden keine teuren gekauft. Beim Beni Ourain ist mir etwas Textilfarbe in ein helles Feld getropft und die lies sich selbst direkt danach mit Gallseife nicht entfernen und ich musste ein neues Stück einsetzen, was bei einem Shaggy problemlos geht. Auch hat keiner der Teppiche nach ein paar Tagen Trocknen beim Sitzen darauf abgefärbt - jedenfalls nicht bei normaler Nutzung. Wenn er nass ist, könnte er sicher ein bißchen abfärben, so wie ein frisch gefärbtes T-Shirt. Generell reicht es, die Teppiche zu saugen und wenn man mit guter Textilfarbe arbeitet und sie in dieser cremigen Form in die offenporigen Fasern einarbeitet, wird sie gut absorbiert und die Farben halten sehr lange. Die Farben der Splatter-Fußmatte sind noch gut, aber der Teppich ist jetzt nach einem Jahr so schmutzig, dass ich sie entsorgen und wieder ein dunkles Stück Teppich nehmen werde. In dem englischen Tutorial hat jemand gefragt, ob der Teppich Flecken auf dem Untergrund hinterlässt, wenn er nass wird - das habe ich nicht ausprobiert, aber in einem echten Kinderzimmer wird auch mal roter Saft verschüttet, daher habe ich dort immer ein Graffitti-Dekor empfohlen, denn die Naturfasern saugen den Saft genauso auf wie Textilfarbe und gehen höchstens mit Chemie raus - das entfärbt aber auch den Teppich. Übrigens auch die original 60er-Wollteppiche, die viel schneller Staub und Schmutz zwischen die Fasern ziehen. Reinigen kann man diese am besten mit Babyshampoo, aber schlimme Flecken bekommt man damit auch nicht wirklich weg. Ich hoffe, das hilft bei der Entscheidung, sich mal ein Reststück für 20 Euro zu besorgen und es auszuprobieren. ;)

+2009mixmax Hi 2009mixmax, sorry for the delay but I'm not used on people commenting and don't check in frequently. As for your questions - you can't seal a rug like you can with a T-shirt you're dyeing, but if you use a high-quality, porous fibre and apply the textile dye as a creamy paste, the fibres will soak it up very well. I put some thicker garbage bags underneath the rug when working inside to not stain the floor underneath and leave the rugs for a few days to completely dry. Unfortunately, you can't put a rug in the washer like a dyed T-Shirt. I walk on the Beni Ourain daily, the big splatter rug and the doormat, though the latter will have to go now after a year. Usually it's o.k. to just vacuum clean them. As for spills - be it red grape juice or red wine - the fibres will soak those up just like they soak the textile dye and you might have to replace that part. I'm not a party animal but had young students as clients, who like to hang out in groups and ... happens. That's why I recommend to save a bit of the colors one mixes for the rug and to have some spare parts of the same carpet. If it is a long-fibre shaggy, one can easily fit in the new part. Trying to use chemicals might clean the stain but most of the time it also bleaches the natural colors. This is also what happens most of the time if you try to clean one of the original wool rugs and that really hurts if you spent hundreds of bucks instead of 40 or 50. I am not a fan of the original rugs when put to actual use daily because they collect dust and crumbs much more easily, the fibres flatten when you walk on them and you have to brush them up all the time plus made from real wool they pill like cotton after some time. The smaller ones can be cleaned by putting them in the washer with a spoonful of Baby Shampoo but they are much more work than a regular carpet. As for staining clothes when sitting on them, I didn't notice anything using them in the kids rooms. If they get really wet, I would definitely pick them up and put something underneath to prevent any possible stains. Just like a dyed T-Shirt will stain a little when first washing it, so might the dripping wet rug. But if you spill red wine on a carpet and sit on it with your white Jeans, they will get stained, too ;) And so far the splatter rugs are a favourite among parents, who won't yell at their children anymore for adding another botch to the Graffitti - especially if the total cost didn't exceed $50 and the party animals just patch up their biggest spills - or make a new rug. I hope that helps with your decision to try one on your own :)

I let it thouroughly dry in the sun and the rugs don't get wet but I am not sure they might leak some colour if they get pretty wet since I didn't want to take a chance on trying to soak them in sealer in my bathtub ;) Smaller items I usually put in a bin with the recommended sealer so the fabric will not bleed if wet.
