EMF cores stop common mode current before it's get to your motor. This protects your motor insulation that ground rings or insulated bearing don't offer. 3Phi

Is CoolBlue effective for all kinds of bearing currents. I thought it only affects circulating bearing currents, because it reduces the common mode current but not the voltage, which is the main reason for EDM-currents. Or am I wrong here?

CoolBLUEs absorb high frequency current to a low level that can be passed by ball bearings without causing destructive electrical discharge machining (EDM). Hence shaft voltage measurement is not a determinant of the effectiveness of CoolBLUE technology. The amount high frequency current can be safely (and easily) measured at the VFD output (or at a pull box). In some instances the current measurement result will indicate that additional cores are required. Proper and best practices used in the motor circuit wiring installation are always required. Thanks Jim, There is this 4100kW wound rotor that usually have burnt pigtail (middle) on all the 18 carbon brushes of the slip ring after few weeks of operation. We have changed the LRS solution, the carbon brushes and also improve on the compartment cooling. What else can contribute to this?

It appears that one ring is burning. Most likely there is a short in that ring's connected phase. Only the LR is starting. My suspicion would be either the brush rigging has a fault or there is a rotor short. Hope this info is helpful and hope your investigation finds the problem.

Thanks Jim this is an old bridge crane controlled by large drum switches. im converting it to a pendant control from the floor instead of cab control. the bridge is a 15hp WRM. if i were to keep the resistors in the rotor circuit, wouldnt that give me good torque and be easier on my vfd? just bouncing some thoughts of you. thanks

The VFD is connected to the stator. You have to use many other parts that breakdown and cause the rotor winding to fail permanently if not maintained. Brushes Sliprings Brush older and springs The VFD wouldn’t see anything . Jim

if you were to replace a drum controller with a pendant control and use pendant to energize a vfd. would setting the resistance of the rotor curcuit at half way would that be a happy medium?

No. Adding resistance to the rotor effects torque. You want to remove all the resistors when using the VFD. The rotor becomes an induction rotor. Changing the frequency will change the torque and the speed. The down side is the original design has a very low starting amperage or code letter. This made it good for lower starting current than the induction motor. Now you can use motor horsepower with the same power supply. - Jim Hudspeth - Technical Trainer

We are having a difficult time trying to fully understand your situation to give you help. It sounds like you have a vertical motor with a spherical roller thrust bearing with Compression Springs? We have a video specific for just such a motor. Setting endplay on a vertical motor with spherical roller thrust bearings is very different from ball angular contract thrust bearings. Also, what id you mean by "...I used Springs bad quality for Thrust bearing"?

Using low pass filters in the output filtering out the HF from the vfd letting through only the low drive freqeunties does that not help? or use of class D three level vfd who has low harmonic distortion and clean sinusoidal signal after the low pass filter set on 100 hz or so.

Thanks for your great videos, very interesting. Question from a total novice: will an NUP bearing function the same whichever way it is oriented on the shaft? I ask because my online research has led me to understand “Mounted on the non-flange side of the inner ring, the thrust collar allows the bearing to carry an axial load in both directions.” And further that “The thrust collar extends out of the bearing on one side, so the dimension across the inner ring is slightly greater than that of the outer ring.” This second explication suggests (to me) that it might matter which order the parts go on the shaft. The Toyota factory installed this bearing on the transmission counter gear shaft (using their terminology) side race, bearing outer race and rollers, and then the inner race, which is a press fit. However, the Toyota Repair Manual, in both the disassembly and reassembly have this order reversed. Which kind of suggests that it doesn’t matter. Bottom line, I want to do it right, do whatever will give me the best, longest service. So I ask the experts, if there is a preferred orientation, what is it? Thank you Robert

The NUP has both outer and inner races the same size including the spacer on the inner race. They are not designed for thrust. The design allows for some containment compared to the NU type with no shoulders on either side. Normally NUP can help so you don’t have to be exact with the dimensions bearing to bearing with bearing caps. There should be a locking method used to stop the axical thrust so NUP doesn’t run hot rubbing the shoulders on either inner or outer races. If I was worried about thrust and was going to have to use the NUP, I would put a snap ring or locking nut in front of the inner ring on the shaft. Most the time the assembly is the problem trying to use these if there is a nut larger then inner race. (response is from Reed's Reno Plant Technical Director)

A little confused about your question. Are you asking how long did the dismantle and inspections take? Or are you asking how long the whole job took? Would like to help you with an answer. Bear in mind that the dismantle took some extra time on this particular unit as we filmed it and made commentary to use as a training aid.
