Gave this a second listen in hopes I'd discover something I missed the first time. It contains some interesting literary analysis, but I can't help but feel this talk exemplifies the worst instincts of theory. So busy gazing at its navel that it forgot to say anything meaningful. Linguistic games played for their own sake and little more. Perhaps my opinion would be different if I were an academic.

I liked the podcast but I was upset about the disparaging comment about President Trump. This profession needs to be aware that not everyone is left leaning.

If the socialist block wasn’t a threat to global capitalism what was the point of the cold war? The wars of Vietnam, Korea…etc And why did the block collapse to the cheers of “the end of history” in the end? I also have no idea whats the difference between bourgeois democracy, social democracy and democratic socialism? Allende could easily fit in all these categories at once.

That Adam at 39 minutes plus is CLUELESS to what the preceeding statement was about - regarding cell phones & tech in general. In a similiar thread of concept - what was once "Macros" in the excel program... became "virus" in computer terms and nary a fool knows this, or if so... why

Have you read Technofeudalism: What killed capitalism by Yanis Varoufakis..... Also the book by Professor Peter Turchin "End Times". Both books that often interesting parallelism in very different ways.

Great Great Discussion. One of the most provocative podcasts.... it makes me think of all kinds of situations in the United States. Death of one CEO and the machine killing 100k of people by holding back medical care. Donald Trump saying he won't accept the vote outcome unless it suits him.... he can say it... so what can you accuse him of.... he has accused himself.

The greatest power is the power to make one construe reality in a certain way. I immediately think of religion and ideologies such a capitalism and Marxism.

Great point in the end, I agree, people first and foremost are looking power and feeling (transformation), "the meaning" comes along side with action itself, and in the end it (meaning) might be completely irrelevant. But when one can take part in something new and creative event ( which is same than death) , that is really something. Also agree going back "to the old good symbolic order" is very stupid idea and make things even worse.

Honestly post modernism is always arguing in a circle and going nowhere fast, basically a useless waste of time and energy. Get back to God and God's truth, most problems solved, and the ones that aren't solved aren't solved by pure reason anyway. But we have to understand that the solutions that revealed truth provide are not the same as a mathematical proof, which standard is rigorous but also too limited, to be of much practical use. So the standard of proof is a little different for general philosophical problems, not perfect certitude, or an airtight proof, but effective proof, which is sufficient to compel belief for most rational people, but will not necessarily answer all possible objections or abolish all sources of doubt, but does work on the less than perfect human level, even if dealing with the possibility of a divine and transcendent order of reality.

There is no better description of "the last man" than the man in the "Utopian" dreamed up by Techno-optimism. The Techno-Optimist Manifesto sounds like an email sent from a CEO to his workers to make them work harder while ignoring the bad work environment.

Holy Fuck. A few years ago, I stumbled into a ZOOM group discussing the book, but I hadn't bought it yet. Nonetheless, I told them I didn't think they were interpreting the concept of DESIRE correctly. Needless to say, I didn't come back the next week! I've spent my life NOT reading this book; a dream perpetually unfulfilled! Suddenly, I'm faced w/ the possibility of ACTUALIZING my life by doing so! Will I follow thru or continue living in a symbolic limbo (by not reading it) that provides a perverse sense of meaning? Thankfully, I have a few weeks to think about it!

Thank you for what Will brought to the table. I know many other trans people self-isolating, and existing in Red States while being shoved to a ghetto without the physical space. Our existence has been marked as an "Issue" and has been posed as a "Question." Our lives have been framed as a conspiracy of "Them." The Democratic party raised none of our concerns, and would rather shove us back behind the couch. For Marxists, we're "a 'distraction' from the class struggle" at best, or at worst: "bourgeois decadence." Our fears are called hysteria. Our needs are called superfluous.

Power is the proper perception of reality / failing to perceive understand reality gives you that you can ignore reality however you cannot ignore the consequences of ignoring reality.🤫 social media often is a fake 📲news machine transforming📐 information into ignorance⏳ and we all know the result🛡, reason why anyone that tells you the truth is an enemy of reality✍ since ignorance is strength the tools of dominance always fail by underestimating the consequences which are unavoidable from waterloo to 70 AD 🤫
