On the Maselec console, the “Mains” are the Kii3’s and the “Aux” gets sent to an external switcher with three speaker selects.

Dorrough 40-C2. I believe there's a plug in version but I really like having analog meters.

Nice Video and Dope Setup! Do you have your Crane Song directly connected digitally via Adat|Spdif to both playback and capture computers at the same time or do you use some type of interfacing via usb,thunderbolt ect. to the computers?
@mparkmixingmastering8511
@mparkmixingmastering8511 Жыл бұрын
It Varies. Usually I go out of Protools via AES to the Crane Song D/A, then after analog processing it goes back into the Crane Song A/D side, then into the ADI via AES, then through the ADI into the capture computer via USB. Sometimes A/D directly into the ADI, then into the Capture computer. There are other configurations as well, it just depends... Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this video! How does the Cranesong HEDD Quantum and the ADI-2 Pro FS R compare sonically? Would you say one is more transparent than the other?
@mparkmixingmastering8511
@mparkmixingmastering8511 Жыл бұрын
These comparisons are hard to articulate. They aren't as dramatic as one might think. I'd say the biggest difference is that the Head Quantum has the DSP, which can really set it apart as far as sound options.

Hello Neal, thanks for the nice video. May I ask which RME DA are you using ? I guess its an RME ADI-2 but I´m very curious how you have mounted this one with these 19” rack panels, since the RME DACs dont have any screws for rack mounting.
@mparkmixingmastering8511

It's a ADI-2 Pro Black Edition. Yeah, its annoying they don't make rack ears for these. I ended up buying a MOTU Ultralite MK5 Half Rack Ear Kit. I then had to do some customization to get it to work. If you remove the outer shell of the converter, you can drill holes to match the rack ear mounting holes. This model converter had plenty of room to fit the screw heads (from the inside) then I added washers and nuts on the outside. Once the rack ears are mounted on the outer shell, you can put it back together. Neal

@@mparkmixingmastering8511 Thanks a lot Neal and what a shame to RME that they dont even provide screw holes. Pretty smart solution from you.

@@mparkmixingmastering8511 one more question about your mesh rack panels. Are these 1/2 U panels order-able, or did you saw them up ? Can't find any nice panels in 1/2 U format for ages. There are some, haven't found anything with this kind of mesh grid. Thanks again.

@@mattymenck Yes, I bought them as 1/2 rack panels. I think they might have been off of eBay. You might try looking on audiorax.com or pennelcomonline.com ~Neal

RME sells a 19" rack conversion that mount to the side screw holes of the normal adi-2/pro/fs etc. The black editions dont have side screw holes so they only fit the unirack made for two units that mountsfrom the bottom using the feet screw holes. i used a piece of rubber to sandwich my black edition in the rack kit made for the silver because i didnt want an opoen space next to it.

Nice setup. Do you think that hardware gear is essential in achieving professional masters or do you believe that technology has come far enough now that plugins would suffice for any job?
@mparkmixingmastering8511
@mparkmixingmastering8511 Жыл бұрын
You can absolutely get professional results just using plug-ins. There are some situations where I master tracks only using plug-ins. It just depends on what is needed for the specific track. All of my plug-in and hardware options are just different tools. You use each tool for a specific task. It's definitely nice to have the option of great analog hardware, which often does sound different/better than the plug-in equivalent, but you can still get good results in the box. If you are doing sample rate conversion during mastering, then I do think it's better to convert through the analog path with high end DA/AD, as I mentioned in the video. Neal
