Now I remember why I don't keep alkaleaks in my DMM, but instead wrapped inside a plastic bag along with a tiny screwdriver in the case. On the other hand, even though I seldom use it, I'm a bit worried about wearing down the threaded insert, even if it's made of metal. Anyway, my condolences for your loss, Dave.

Try "industrial" AA and AAA alkaline batteries. or lithium.

This happened to my 121GW with Eveready's in it. Hard to repair it without a new back case, so it's gonesky.

This is all too common, batteries ruining equipment, there's gotta be a way to stop it. I'm going to give lithium AA's a go !
@SeanBZA5 сағат бұрын
Would say PCB leakage would be a bigger factor, but low humidity inside will mitigate that. Try leaving one in the sun in a car for a day, then put in a plastic sealed bin to hold the high humidity in, and try again fast in the lab, to see just how much PCB leakage is.

You know about that leaky problem Dave. Why do you store your rare items with batteries in them. Let’s make a rescue and restore video about it maybe?

I still don't understand why we don't ban Alkalines. Design the products for NiMh low self discharge cells...

Now you have a circuit and battery holder that definitely causes leaks... you can use the second multimeter for the next AA leakage livestream!

I read online that ever since they stoped putting mercury in batteries they started to leak more often. I would like to know how true is this?

Why would you leave normal batteries in something you care about? Use rechargeables or take them out.

What was the timespan? Certain devices seem to be hit the hardest. I have mic pack with totally flat battery & no leaks but it hits my multimeter. I have a pen type i really like & it suffers most times with different makes. Now using NiMH but the do not last long before changing. I know different voltage but NO LEAKS yet! WHY!?

Ohh, the "Ultralife" are just crawling out of those batteries. ☹ Yes, have actually seen even worse leakage from D-cells that was just a few months old. When 6 D-cells all leaks, then it really becomes a mess.

It seems alkalines go a lot leakier when mercury got banned. Now mercury toxicity is so bad there is no justification to reintroduce it. But alkalines did leak before so I am simply removing batteries from rarely used devives. Rechargeables have gotten so good that I mostly switched to them. Some people swear by lithium batteries but those are expensive and not available in all form factors or shoos. They are a good option for devices that don't run with the 1.2V of NiMH cells. In case of a leak neutralise the alkaline goo with acetic acid. 5% works well. Then rinse with water. Vinegar may work but contauns other compounds so I use normal acetic acid for household use. Another precaution is to store devices with the battery compartment down.
