In 1966 or '67 I was chosen along with a few hundred other high school musicians to participate in a little thing called Music In May at a small university in Oregon. There was an orchestra, a choir, and the band where I played clarinet. One of our guest conductors that year was Vaclav Nelhybel. His forte was this type of asymmetrical, multi-rhythmic, sometimes discordant, powerfully moving music. He was a very physical "pepper-pot" conductor, and it was quite an experience.

As a practice tempo it is alright for high school. I'm guess about 90-100 bpm. However, marching in a parade at that tempo is death, and it should be around 120 bpm. Ex HS banc director here.
