Love Joe South and I love this song. But, like the poem says, '' can you really ever go home''? I know what you may be thinking; what poem is he talking about? Well, I'm talking about the one I wrote, of course......

I just listened again after 50 years and I'm not coping any better now than I did then! I was called up for National Service in Australia in 1969 and during recruit training we were always either too busy or too tired to listen to the radio, except on Sundays, our day off. It was such a lonely day because we had time to think; to miss family and girlfriends. Then that bloody song would play and you'd try to not let anyone see the tears in your eyes. Somebody's tape recorder would play "Don't it make you wanna go home now, don't it make you wanna go home," and you'd hear a chorus of "F........n oath it does."

This song has a special meaning for me. I spent some of my early childhood growing up in the rural South. I have a special feeling and kinship for the South, its beauty and way of life back in the 50’s. Back then it was a hauntingly beautiful place that finds its way into your soul and leaves an indelible mark. And yes, it does make me wanna go home.

Beautiful song. Most of his were. Comments I read remind me of Revelations 21:3-4. If you don’t know them look them up while you have your e-device in your hand. Enjoy.
