Stunning piece. I listen to it every year around this time, right before Yom Kippur. For those who may not know, this piece is actually sung in the synagogue in the evening of Yom Kippur. Kol Nidre means “all vows.”

We should always remember that Col Nidre is a prayer that developed because of Christian persecution at the time of the Spanish Inquisition which forced Jews to convert or die. When I see all these churchmen sitting there with yarmulkas on and almost assuming that this prayer in some way belongs to them, I want to tell them that Col Nidre has nothing to do with them except that their Church forced cruel conversions upon the Jews.Perhaps they should read the meaning of the Hebrew words sometime and they should repent.

Kol Nedri dedicated to Dorothy Lerner of Meridian, Mississippi who dedicated her life to teaching Piano, Viola, and Cello to the children of Meridian as well as organized the Meridian Symphony in 1962. She and I spent countless hours playing (she on the piano) and (I on the cello) PLAYING the Kol Nidri.

Try also Gary Hoffman (conducted by Rostropovich for the Janos Starker tribute), and this one (which you won’t be able to find without the link, since it’s buried uncredited in the middle of a four hour livestream): kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJuqopaJfKyDnLc
