Brings back fond memories of my early years of slalom canoeing, the heyday with thousands in the BCU annual ranking yearbook. I was watching at this event on the side lines for the worlds. Took lots of photos. After slalom took up down river & represented Australia in the 1995 Worlds which were held at Bala, paddling C1. 😊

Used to train with Richard on the placid waters of the Lea at Wheathampstead. St Albans CC had an agreement and poles there. Always maintained that flat-water slalom training was better. Never did me no good as didn't make it to Prem. Great sport and great days though. Good to see the Fox family keeping up the trads in Aus.

Gail Allan was part of our training squad in Ambleside and she paddled amazingly well. Richard Fox is the undoubted master and has passed those genes on, as has Myriam!

Greetings from the US. It is fun to see the guys/gals we got to race with from back in the day. I had been racing for a couple years when I got to gate judge with Cathy Hearn at the '79 Ocoee race. Didn't know anything about her, much less that she would win three gold medals a few months later. She gave me background on the talent going down that day. The likes of Davey Hearn, Bob Robinson, Kent Ford & John Lugbill. We became friends, incredible memory

Great footage, thank you. It mentioned the US C1 team but had no footage of them. Ron, Jon and Davey gave the most awesome exhibition of whitewater mastery as I have seen in my life.

Oh I remember when it was 10 seconds for a touch & 50 seconds you missed a gate, only paddled this river twice and the Dee once, being from east London it was a long run, if only we had Lea valley back then, no more bi weekly trips to Nottingham, great times !

Spent waaay to much time watching Richard, it was almost like the water stopped for him, can you imagine what he would of win today, back then he worked a full time job now they are all professional athletes ( not that Richard wasn't professional...far from it)

The current is very strong as the tidal flow comes in and out of the bay through the narrow gap, hence the name the Rip. It also claimed many ships in the days of sail.

I was told my photo made a British tabloid, plastered on the headwall - at the Pre-worlds in 1980.

1981 World's. 7th place in Men's K1 race. One touch on gate 7 meant goodbye to the bronze medal for myself. Still, did manage to make a statement and win the Pre-World's the year before with two clean runs. Great memories....thanks for uploading.

The ultimate run by the greatest paddler ever. Canoe slalom was my first love and those long training sessions at Shepperton Canoe Club will always be good memories. Slalom is more like limbo these days and gone are the smooth lines and longer courses.

Yep i paddled a coulple of comps at shepperton & was at Augsburg when he won, i still have my pro am extra in the garage ( to many good memories to let that go) im not surprised hes daughter ( Jessica fox) is now world champion,this man won 3 in a Row and the woman he married was the french world champion... i used to watch him and it was almost like the water stopped for him.. but yes i remember shepperton c c and camping on the lil island when comps was on, in fact that was the event i got into Div 2 at, winning a div 3 event back then...BEST TIMES EVER ( also this world champs we would jump into the top of the course 3 or 4 of us and see how far we got before ze germans jumped in to drag us out lol, they would be at the washing machine on ropes with diving fins on to rescue swimmers...they didnt quite understand we was jumping in to swim the course lol, now we have lea valley with the elevator at tge bottom of the course,you paddle on it take you back to the top, beats Nottingham having to get out & carry the thing back up the course

Certainly a legend in men's K1. Jon Lugbill, US C1, wasn't exactly a slacker. Agree with you about the today's limbo slalom. Enjoyed the days when the poles were lower. Good racers would still excel in either format
