Really cool project, thanks for sharing. Before I deep dive into it, is there any noticeable lag? Is the Pico taking inputs directly from the controller or does it have to do protocol translation of any sorts?

Hi! I used an 8 channel logic level shifter instead of the resistors and transistors... I have a 6 button generic controller and when I connected everything the left and right buttons stay on all the time and the a and x buttons presses two buttons simultaneously. Up and down seems to be working and the rest of the buttons don't work.. Im going to debug it tomorrow with a logic analyzer, but maybe you have an idea of what could be wrong..

Way to go. It's really impressive what you're doing with the Pico. Think something similar would be possible with a Xbox controller? I don't need any more projects right now but could be a fun project

I've tried to watch 'That 90's Show' only because it still has Red and Kitty. But I'm just getting too old now. I gave a double thumbs up on Netflix but I stopped at episode 2. I don't like it as much. But it made me bust out my complete collection of That 70's Show. I'm loving it ALL OVER AGAIN!! I was born in '87 but The Original was my teen go to!!

www.raspberrypi.com/products/raspberry-pi-pico/ Just this board and 4 resistors. I have a schematic in the readme below. Fuses are not really necessary, but I felt the need for development just in case. You can use higher value resistors and nix the fuses. Probably ~50 ohm would be good. thanks for showing how to test the sensor for resistance. I was doing it but had it on wrong setting so thought it was busted, switching it to 20K was the key

I got a cheap one from a friend which works, but I seem to remember the cheap ones don't provide the full functionality. Jerking the controller only taps the A button. I'll get my hands on a Fission rod eventually.

I suppose my only difficulty with this project is that I will be requiring some soldering skills right. Easiest would be if 4/5 pin jst could be used from one end tomthe other. But I can always pay for the soldering job from a pro.

That is the plan. I currently have the controller working as a USB HID gamepad. It at least works with steam. I haven't tried anything else yet.

I may want to buy this when it is complete. Will you attempt to incorporate the fishing rod which uses motion gyroscope as well it is use on games such as Sega Bash fishing. And Dreamcast fightstick. Before deciding to buy the Raphnet. I want to wait for this project. @James

I'm taking my sweet ass time with it 😅I'm still motivated to get it done at least. I didn't consider the fishing rod since I don't have one, but I'm thinking of picking one up now. I'd bet the fightstick would come up as a regular controller.

@@MilesTailsPrower86 Yes, what I know is that the Raphnet adapter works with the fightstick however the Madcatz (two controller) adapter failed the fightstick as it could not register the C and the Z button. I am quite happy however that people are still doing dreamcast projects. Some people will be interested in the shooting g*n controller for house of the dead but me personally I dont use that. And I think most of them requires a CRT?

Ah! Thanks for pointing that out. I didn't realize there were C and Z buttons. There are 7 digital bits that I don't have mapped to anything, and I bet they will be the unmapped bits I have above a/b and x/y. All of those I set to "none" may as well be mapped to something on the HID gamepad device. github.com/Tails86/DreamcastControllerUsbPico/blob/main/DreamcastController.hpp#L24 I'm wondering if the fishing rod uses what I mapped as the right analog too. Lightgun does require CRT, so that is very low on my priority list.

@@MilesTailsPrower86 yes fishing rod must be tricky. I think it is like a wiimote. The C and Z for fighting sticks are essentially L and R but i suppose because it is named c and Z it causes some sort of issue. Fun times. Vmu is probably going to be complex I suppose?

My buddy said he will bring me his fishing rod when he visits in a couple of weeks. VMU is going to be interesting. Communicating with it is no problem - I've already figured that part out (nothing coded yet - just written down on paper). Special software would be needed on the PC side though, and I'd likely have to fork the latest open source version of Redream to write hooks directly into the emulator to get the screen to work right. The latest open source version is a few years old now - they went closed source at that point. I'm hoping that if I can show that it works, maybe that would be enough to get attention from the closed source community and eventually into the latest Redream? They seem to still be actively developing that emulator with the hopes of monetizing their product.
