Why is that? Is the damage they deal just too large for any defence to matter sort of thing?

@@keeganjohnson3376 alot of the bosses and mobs in calamity late game esp post moonlord have the ability to break defence or deals damage buff that ignores defence. at this point even if you have like 9000 defence some still can poison you to death. might as well just do max dps output

@@keeganjohnson3376 one of the example of this is Providence, the Profaned Goddess. most of its attack inflicts holy flame buff which can last to like 6 sec. which deals the following No health regeneration -20 health per second (if player) -100 health per second (if enemy)
