Create your own characters with backstory and it will be accepted. Turning a character by race/gender swapping is just lazy. Diverse characters that are made organically and do not pander will have more traction. Just saying like what we are forcing down your throat or you are racist or misogynist is not a good strategy and reeks of immaturity. Also, build characters that actually have an arc and some humility. Not just characters that come out of the womb to kick ass.

The problem isn't that there is inclusion that makes people upset and against Marvel movies being woke. It's the co-opting of existing characters to do so, AND the BAD scripts created to push it over a good story. Having characters of different races, genders, sexuality is fine, just create a new character that is such AND don't make the movie JUST about that one facet of the person. And for many of us it isn't that Sam is Black, BUT HE DOESN'T HAVE THE SUPER SOLDIER SYRUM and the powers that come from that. Ergo he isn't Capt America.

Inclusion is one thing, Comic books and super-hero movies have always had a foot in that door...Dragon age inquisition made me realize these woke warriors do have a point sometimes -- diversity and inclusion can be good but must be done with responsibility less it show a hollow shadow of their intent.

I really liked these two episodes especially the characters. I already love that they're focusing more on the neighborhood side, cuz the side characters are literally their own main characters. Especially Lonnie. Wasn't expecting Cara Connors but I'm here for it due to the story. I love the different shake-ups to a different universe The part where Spider-Man saves the pets from that fire person, is literally Spider-Man. But apparently all that was deemed and was afraid of being "woke" Great review as always Megan. Good rant. Seems like the problem is clarification so I wouldn’t hold too much against him at the moment. Woke is a term much like Black Lives Matter, patriarchy or Nationalism. Means different things to different people. To me, it’s pushing a certain agenda rather than making a point. X-men is obvious about what it means but it’s not overtly telling you to believe something. If you don’t catch it you just enjoy a cool comic/story. I think that’s the area where everyone can enjoy whatever thing you’re creating. That’s the fandom area I wanna live in.

I felt my hype levels for Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man come to a grinding halt after this interview. I'll still watch it, of course, I just feel like I'm now going into it with a heavy amount of skepticism. It shouldn't have to be like this. The same people that cry "keep politics out of our entertainment" are the first to praise comments like this when it aligns with their beliefs. I'm just so tired of "woke" being used as a blanket term for anything that doesn't match a certain demographic. So, so tired of it.

"Woke" wasn't a political term but it's become a hot button issue because it's a word that people can hide what they are really feeling behind. The same goes for "DEI". I have no issue with people critiquing *how* diversity, inclusion, etc. is implemented. No underrepresented group ever wants to feel like they are just a box being checked so some major corporations head honcho can say, "Look at what we did!" But people won't even give things a chance before they trash it for being "woke" which shows their true intentions; especially when there's years of established stories to draw from with those same characters. It's ridiculous.

I agree that whatever he meant by saying that was very bad timing. Since he didn't actually tell us what he thinks that means, we can only assume and that doesn't look good for him. Seems like the PR folks would have to be doing some clean up.
