I think those Mirror dinghies would look great with some kind of "Bow Beard" mounted on the bow of the boat... Give 'er a "tug boat" look...

@@tilroh so many sail-shortening options with a ketch! Considered taking in a reef in the main, but for simplicity and safety handed it altogether, with not much speed penalty.

This boat is almost surreal, like it's impossible that it even exists! I actually have the plans in a compendium of Bolger designs. I'm not sure there's enough information to build it, but I'll certainly think about it. It's called " boat dreaming."

I am trying to decide between the Pathfinder and the 6M Whaler for my boat build. I want to do events like the Race to Alaska, The Texas 200, and the Everglades Challenge so the ability to sleep aboard and good seakeeping is a must. I also need to balance that with the ability to row it for longer periods. My last "Want" is to be able to overnight camp with myself and two smaller framed persons under a boom tent or dodger. I am hoping that since you have had some experience with the Welsford designs, you will be able to give some input on why you chose the Whaler over the Pathfinder for your boat. On paper, they appear to be about the same length but the Whaler seems like a much larger boat to me and I am afraid it might be too big for weekend towing to the lake or rowing on the local city lake.

Beluga wasn’t a new build. I was looking for a Pathfinder but couldn’t find one. I hadn’t considered a Whaler until this one became available. I like the larger boat. With auxiliary power, I can handle her solo, but can take a crowd as in this video. For accommodation and sea keeping she’s great. But rowing for extended periods you could only contemplate with a crew of four. I’ve rowed one or two up but only for short bursts in placid conditions. I don’t have any experience with a Pathfinder but there are plenty on the Welsford Facebook group that do. Good luck!

This is similiar to the Bolger Gypsy although it seems a little bigger. I would like it better however if the mast was unstayed.

There were at least two (Toona Maris at 0:20 and Swordfish e.g. at 4:36), but you make a fair point, most boats were jib-headed.

Oh, Tony, I'm torn between an overwhelming desire to have a boat like Wotama sailing in that area in those (varied) conditions, with the promise of good conversation at anchor on one hand, and the simplicity of a sailing dinghy on the other. I would almost give my right arm for a boat on which I could go below at the end of a spirited sail. I am so very happy for you! Ross

Just re-watching the drone footage and noticing the tendency of the mirror dinghy to almost instantly round up as the boat starts to surf the wave. I wonder if this is due to the hull speed being almost instantly exceeded. Any comments? The boats look stable throughout. @TonyKeyes

I'm no expert Chris, but I have since thought that if I was doing it again, I'd have the centreboard up, get my weight as far aft as possible, steer less than 90 degrees to the breaking seas, and maybe scandalise or even douse the main.

Tony, Just discovered your 6-meter videos and really enjoying them. I agree with the comment about appreciating the natural sounds of sailing, music-free. How is it sailing solo with the 6-meter? Can you launch, rig, and haul out easily without assistance? Thanks again for the gorgeous rides!

G’day Ken. She’s a biggish boat for a trailer, but with a properly fitted one I find it readily manageable. With a strong cross wind, tide or current a second pair of hands is useful. Similarly, if you’re not in a hurry she can be rigged and sailed single handed, again being sensible with the conditions. The yawl rig affords multiple options for shortening sail in a blow. Cheers, Tony

G'day Jason. I've sailed around Logan Inlet a bit, and on the big open lower reaches, decent wind and water levels afford good sailing. But the upper reaches were a real revelation. We were fortunate with the wind, particularly early in the day, and of course the levels are optimal now. Let's go, when the weather improves!
