Worked for a guy who owned a driving range and then got contracted to mow a bunch of adjacent federal land. Same mower - or two of them, F10s. They were super - about a gallon an hour or less on fuel, 14 feet wide and five miles an hour. if a golf ball was hidden in the rough, the reels would slice/punch it into two flying halves with a loud "ding!". Ours were set up to mow half an inch to an inch depending on conditions. The grass grew slower if we stunned it like that, and on the driving range side, people preferred to imagine a long roll out as how far they could hit a golf ball. The federal land had only one rule - grass not higher than some figure. there was no rule about how short it could or couldn't be.

Thanks for the constructive feedback.... Yeah I could use a better video/audio setup, maybe even some editing software but frankly, these videos are created as a rudimentary "owner's manual" for a future golf course owner - guess it's safe to say that my dreams of evolving into a golf course owner influencer and receiving 6 or 7 figure checks from KZbin are shattered

JD reels are made with the worst metal and the dumbest design. They think spring pressure on the race (bearing cup) won't allow the cup to spin. Only a few hundred to replace the housing.

yeah... this traction unit's main circuit board went poof a couple of times and at $500+ each time I just gave up. I'm using a Toro fairway unit now at MGC... much easier to adjust (except for the rear cutting unit whose motor is right next to the bedknife adjustment bolt)

Hey russ,Just a suggestion when adjusting reel to bedknife the reel should be removed and set flat on a bench in the level position.you are not adjusting them properly or accurately when reel is at a 45° angle.sure sounds and looks to me that clearance is way to tight.reel should turn more freely with very very light contact.do u backlapp or grind ?

Hi Jeff, thanks for the heads up... putting in 15 hrs/day doing ...well... just about everything associated with "Owning your own Golf Course". Sure I have some help mowing but the dirty, time consuming jobs are all mine. You're right. No weight on the rollers, but even level on a bench there's no weight on the bedknife, is there? I should just pull the pins and pull the cutting units off one at a time to set them up better. I don't have a grinder on site; I use Brian G over at Reelsharp in Pittsfield MA once a year for that. Other than that I backlap (when I can)

I used to adjust mine on a concrete floor I’d pick up the rear roller and drop it may be an inch or so bang it on the ground and it would change the adjustment, I like to adjust them so if you hit a bump they don’t go Tight they go loose, i use a single piece of newspaper at each end so that it pinches the paper so hard that you can’t pull it out. But yes up on the bench you can do your spinning it with your fingers and seeing if it cuts the first piece of newspaper and not the second you should have the fold of the paper into the helix of the real,And since that’s a John Deere make sure you use plenty of corn head a grease.😂 I like the gloves I don’t think they will save your fingers a lot of people in this industry are missing fingers.😮

What a compliment... As the owner-operator of my little Mom & Pop I'm hardly a mechanic... that's why I've created this series. Perhaps someday someone will make me an offer I can't refuse and I can "retire" to a (part-time?) job as a jack-of-all-trades, master of none on some other (lucky?) owner's golf course?

John Deere reels are the hardest things I ever tried to get right, even fresh off the grinders. My future project is to make a mount system for Jacobsen reels to fit a John Deere tractor. 25 years in the business and the best I have ever seen was the Jake reel when it comes to quality and simplicity. They whisper when they are right and cut news paper without folding. I used to use a grass blade to set them. I use hickory leaves for JD reels now.

Hi Could you explain why you take the core of earth out in two pieces and not the whole core in one go? . Also how long does it take to change all 18 flag positions. Regards Arthur chambers
@meadowsgolf
@meadowsgolf 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Arthur! Over the years I've found it well nigh impossible to get the cup cutter to full depth in one pass... I'm not working on USGA spec greens (sand based) so my root zone and deeper is a native soil (Barbour Loam) and sand (from topdressing) mix and is denser than a sand based green. I've found that extracting the turf down to my guestimate depth of roots (about half way (or more in Spring and Fall))
@meadowsgolf
@meadowsgolf 6 жыл бұрын
oops... hit enter? so I can get down to full depth in two passes. I takes me about an hour to hit my 10 greens (9 plus the practice green's 3 cups) ... unless I hit rocks on #s 4, 5, 6 where subsurface stones about the size of your palm can present an issue from time to time.

No doubt! I've driven it up and down Route 28 from time to time, trying to keep up with traffic... the F10 is a real handful to keep going in a straight line what with rear steering and front wheel drive - what a handful!!!

Lol!! Mine had the steering tie rod break when I had it going full speed on the neighborhood street through the course, it ended up in a front yard with me barely hanging on. lol. I had to get it back to the shop by kicking the wheels straight and stopping, going a few feet, getting off, kick the wheels,turning again, lol.

We had another with no brakes, and I used to run it just by putting it in first and turning it off to stop. I worked at several courses, and that F-10 was one my dad ran in the seventies, the same machine and this was about the year 2000. We opened up the oil filler cap and it was full of grey water, it must not have been changed in years and it still ran. They really don't build things like that F-10 anymore it was literally worn out and just kept mowing...
@meadowsgolf
@meadowsgolf 7 жыл бұрын
Brakes? F10 has brakes? Well I guess so... the master cylinder on mine fell apart years ago - I still have the parking brake but giving that handle a yank results in a pretty violent pull to the left (so I try to keep trees, fences, light poles to my right as much as possible). Better off just using judgement and common sense when it comes to speed and path (hence I'm one of the few to cut rough at my course)

He doesn't quite know what hes talks about but sure. Pathogens or disease can happen at any pH event at the perfect pH level. Greens are susceptible even if when your on a preventative schedule of fungicides. Some cultivars of bentgrass are just more susceptible to diseases, breeding new cultivars have helped cut that out but nothing is perfect....yet. Russ should of been using the proper sand as well, mixing sand is never good and he could of simply raised the pH properly by spraying
