@@marianomellert1017 I asked this in my community chat, but wanted to poll a few commenters, to help me in creating the tutorial: Do you prefer a long step-by-step tutorial or more to the point tutorial, quickly moving through some of the VFX basics involved (like green screen keying and rotoscoping) to get to the “meat” of the tutorial.
@marianomellert10172 ай бұрын
@@obscurity_films Answer: Be direct. Don't show the parts of how you did the rotoscoping. You can only say what method you used. I have seen all the tutorials to make fog with After effects and Davinci Resolve from the last 12 years on KZbin. First: There aren't many. They all show something different but they are not good. Making volumetric fog is not viable in only AE. What you published is a more Sylent Hill style fog in a tripod.. I'm making a short film and I can't get it right, I love your effect.

I thnk a main issue with a lot of microbudget/no-budget film lists is that the ones that are considered best or highly recommended are often these more drama heavy, psychological films...which is perfectly fine (a lot of the objectively best films are drama heavy stuff) but for me these are not the kind of movies I personally want to make. I do want to make the spectacle-based action stuff like big blockbusters, they are largely the most influential to me and my understanding of filmmaking language...and they just feel more fun to make and write in my opinion. The only low-budget film I'm aware of that comes close to the type of movies I like is the Robert Rodriguez action movie El Mariachi. I just kind of wish there are more examples of microbudget action movies or even sci-fi action stuff that I can watch for inspiration.
@obscurity_films3 ай бұрын
@@ajerqureshi6411 I feel you on that. There is often a big correlation between spectacle and budget. I think you would likely want to combine action with another genre like Thriller, Scifi, or Comedy. You’d definitely need to find ways to keep it smaller scale or lean into creative choices. I haven’t watched them yet, but Edgar Wright did two very low budget action films before he made it big, may be worth checking those out! For scifi, Cube is just slightly over budget for this but they pulled their film off by using the same set over and over again and just painting it.

What are your thoughts on using a camera with an APSC sensor? Been considering upgrading to the FX3, but the FX30 is super appealing considering the price...
@obscurity_films4 ай бұрын
Ain't nothing wrong with an APS-C sensor! I had the Fuji X-T3 before this and really enjoyed it. I mainly ditched it because it didn't have IBIS and I wanted to use my vintage lenses handheld (ironic because I've been using a lot of tripod lately). Most of the movies shot on film that we know and love were shot on Super 35 which is basically the same sensor size. I'd say a big pro to APS-C is more affordable options for lenses. Pros of full frame are letting more light in and greater depth of field at wider focal lengths. So if you're shooting a lot of low light it might be worth considering (but also Sony is known to be great in low-light so it might not matter).
@obscurity_films4 ай бұрын
Oh, the other thing I would say is battery life! No idea what that’s like on the FX30. Honestly functionality stuff like that is maybe the biggest factor for me these days. I hate changing batteries every 30-40 minutes and don’t want to deal with an elaborate rig. I usually get 3 or so hours out of my small S5 battery.

Sorry to hear this one didn't work out for you. I suspect that there's a reason why they always advise low budget filmmakers to stick to simple concepts, like very few locations and actors, to keep the cost and complications down. Maybe concentrating on good story, dialogue and actors could help. Sometimes, simplicity is key. I've just made a short film that's mainly dialogue, but hopefully interesting to watch. Anyway, don't lose your creativity, there's always a next time.

Thanks! This actually feels so long ago now haha. I’m currently over halfway through shooting a new feature, and am actually making a short film version of this project (with a bunch of changes to make shooting easier). Simplicity is definitely huge, and something I definitely still struggle with. Trying to thread that needle between simplicity and pushing myself towards challenging things I’m interested in (like VFX). Thanks for watching, I will check out your film soon!

Haha thanks bro. I am currently working on a new anthology feature film with 4 stories, and I’ve shot 2 of them so far! And actually this film that I gave up on will be one of the stories! It will look much different than the original idea and much shorter, but still the same basic premise and main characters!

Great video! One thing I noticed (even as a kid, I've been a Star Wars fan forever) was the difference in movement and cinematography between the original trilogy and the prequels. You're right that setting yourself a limit: keeping camera movements fixed to a tripod, you can also think better about your composition. I also notice the difference between the frenetic photography of The Force Awakens with a lot of movement, dollys and quick cuts, versus a calmer composition and less movement like The Last Jedi had. I think that is another good topic to compare, because in 2 films from the same trilogy, you can notice the difference in approach between 2 different directors (JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson). Great analysis, good luck with your film!
@obscurity_films9 ай бұрын
Thanks! That's a great insight between TFA and TLJ! I might visit that at some point in the future, tbh the new trilogy still bums me out a bit. Mostly because of the total lack of consistency between the films haha.
@manmadeartists9 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your insights! This is really helpful for my 3d animations especially that scene from starwars with r2d2 you took as an example for the tension you feel between a static shot which for me was kind of scary when the camera rests on the tripod and when it changes to shaking handheld movements to represent the pov of the creature.

Totally! Creating that contrast is a simple way to do so much. Good luck with the animating!

First of all thank you for making this video. You made some excellent points and it was all well thought out. Most of these films I had never heard of so I feel motivated to check them out. I thought for sure "El Mariachi" would have made the list but that's ok, not the end of the world. Honestly I don't understand where all the praise for "Creep" comes from. I watched it twice to see if there was something I missed but found myself bored out of my mind both times. On a positive note the sequel was better in my opinion. Again thanks for the video.

Hi, I have a question regarding my camera, Panasonic HC-V180. What setting do i have to choose in Dehancer? Source, Camera, Vendor, Format? I cant find information on the internet about it.

I don't think that camera has a log mode, so there isn't a specific camera profile you need to use. You would just select "Rec. 709" instead
