Poor dive. Started to soon and wound up Get someone like a Ricky Henderson and study it again. Sports science was a joke of a show. Just watch the softball bs baseball episode

Ok so when you dive, at one point you do pull ahead, then why not dive a bit late, and you’ll get to the bag faster?

slide to first its better

I loved sports science growing up. I remembered they had this segment. Which is faster? Running or sliding/diving? I’m here 10 years later to see which was faster. Because in 2024 some MLB teams are no longer sliding into second because it’s faster. Just watched a short where a force was turned into a tag because of this & scored a run even though it was the 3rd out. Chess not checkers!

But they actually just proved it's faster to slide, he just wasn't timing it right, a perfect dive would be hitting the bag the millisecond you touch the ground and it would actually be faster. As shown in the video

I’d like to see this same experiment but compare it to situations where the runner has a half stride to go. Not a full stride like you did here

Not only thank you Jackie for going all thru that hell and proving all it takes some want to in your body to get thru hell and that there is always a light at the end of the tunnel no matter how dark it is just keep moving forward and everything will be alright. But thanks to Branch Rickey for having Gods heart and not judging someone off what they look like. He wanted Jackie to get a chance and opportunity just like everyone else.

That was such a shitty dive, he should've slid
@googoo-gjoob2 жыл бұрын
running is the gas pedal. diving is at best drifting. if you hit the ground _before_ reaching the bag, now youve hit the brakes. diving into 1st is *STUPID* 100% of the time.

It is basically BULL SHIT UNscience! When they start the 10 foot timing they start the head first slide when his center of gravity is about 3 1/2 feet from the 10 foot start line, as his outstretched hand is just touching the 10 feet start line (at :45). When they do the run through the bag timing his center of gravity is about 1 foot from the 10 foot start line (at 1:01). He decelerates by 50% once his feet leave the ground (What you smoking to believe this?!?!?!). That happens because they appear use different frame rates in the final overlay at 1:24. It is REALLY about center of gravity, with the center of gravity over the same point, you can reach with your outstretched hand about 2 to 2 1/2 feet further in front with your when your body is in a horizontal position, compared to reaching out with lead foot extended with body in vertical position. Watch a long jumper and tell me they decelerate 50% once they leave the ground. Also 18MPH is 26.4 ft/sec which means you cover 10 feet in .379 seconds, not the reported .260!!! At 18mph each foot traveled takes .037878 seconds, so if you can gain 2 feet by reaching further with your outstretched hand with horizontal body as opposed to lead foot with upright body you can get to 1st base by sliding head first .076 sec faster. Sliding into 1st base should used A LOT more often!!! We need Mark Rober to make a real science video on this topic!!!!

The only reason you dive into first or home is to avoid being tagged out. If it’s a force play you run through first or home no matter what. The only time you would ever dive into first is if either the first baseman or the pitcher fields a ground ball and can’t step on the base in time to get the force out at first. The only time you dive into first is to avoid getting tagged out which is pretty rare at first base because 90% of the plays there are force plays.
@sarycaleb3 жыл бұрын
But if you slide with the only goal to get faster to the base, you should not do it to far from the base, you have to throw yourself closer and straight to the base. Think about it, if you are in a rase and you throw yourself in the last second on the goal line you would probably beat the guy that is next to you. Same in baseball, if you slide to early you will slow down a bit, but if you throw on the base you'll get faster.
