From the perspective of a Slayer fan that has been listening to Iron Butterfly since forever; I understand the purpose of this cover, I know what they did it, I wouldn't have had it any other way, all good there. But the song itself doesn't fit the Thrash genre, and much less in the Slayer fashion. Maybe if Metallica or Anthrax had covered it (maybe even Megadeth; that would've been an interesting experiment) it would've had succeeded as a standalone piece. But this on its own is a terrible idea; concept wise, not with execution. Dio or Judas Priest covering this song would’ve had been much more appropriate because the Heavy Metal genre is closer to the essence of the song. Think of it this way; You’re going from early heavy metal, a fusion of psychedelic and hard rock, passing through raw Heavy Metal, and punching in with Speed and Thrash Metal; too forced. A Heavy Metal band covering this is much more natural.
