Maybe I'm missing something, but I think I could achieve the same result with an embossing machine? Principle of operation and design look pretty identical.

If you’re talking about something like the Xcut Xpress or whatever it was called - yes. But these are significantly cheaper.

@@goilo888 The most widely-used is by Sizzix, but there are other brands too. I quickly googled it ad the Sizzix machine (which is larger than this one), costs about £70 (+ it can do embossing). Couldn't find the proposed price of this press.

Can you make smaller prints using this press, like the XS or Standard size? Or limited to postcard size only?

Why would you not be able to? Simply use a smaller piece of paper or trim one down.

Unfortunately not, sorry. While the files for our original open-source design are still freely available and specifically designed for easy 3D printing, this new press requires various hardware components to withstand the pressure of intaglio prints. Offering a DIY kit like we did in the past, where we provided the hardware and you 3D printed the rest, isn’t feasible for this design. It requires specialized tools and equipment for proper assembly. However, we hear your feedback and will consider how we might better incorporate this approach into future projects. :)

Can I 3d print the object used to emboss? Or does it experience too much force?

You can definitely print what you want to emboss! I'd suggest making it about 1-2mm thick. With very thick high quality paper you might be able to emboss even thicker plates, but it might tear at some point during printing.
