I'm new to ballet and for my spring show with my group, towards the end I have to do a double pirouette in our contemporary piece. I know balance is definitely something I have to improve on, got any extra tips?

Fantastic video. I’m not a ballerina at all, but I’ve always loved the movements, the music, and the athleticism. Your breaking down the components and specifics to practice at each key point was fantastic! Thank you.

Hi there! What would you suggest starting wise for exercise for strength and balance? I have little dance experience but looking to get back into it. Very hard to find classes in my area for adult "beginners"

It's not degage! It's battement tendu at the beginning by the bar! Terrible arms and hands positions, ladies. And tuck your butts under, will you!

It’s unreal his understanding of applied body mechanics and how he respects ballet dancers as the athlete/artists they are. I love the non-daintiness. Also, how much better would students do if we knew what we were actually trying to do broken down this way. It makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE

Good luck with your high school dance. Remember pirouettes are all about balance so practice the basics first and try to stay up as long as possible without putting your heel down. 👍

The stretch-shortening cycle is happening, but it has nothing to do with the steps so much as loading the connective tissues and elastic components of the muscle-tendon unit to enhance the amount of force beyond what the contractile elements can produce. The SSC is simply spring-loading the muscles. So a good, fast plie uses the SSC to increase jump height, for example. Great vid(s) all in all!

Love this comment 👍 I use the run up (steps before) to increase acceleration before using SSC, but as you rightly said that comes from the plié to increase height. Many thanks 🙏

i have about 10 things ruining my pirouettes. I am aware of most of them. also i'm scared of hurting my knee, ankle and foot when the floor is not slippery enough. It is so hard trying to fix all of these problems at once, but if i fis only one bad habit at a time, i still won't be turning. you're right i should probably go back to practicing balance in retiré.

Not a fan of RAD, but appreciate your advice. Think you turned in Randal's feet too much. Good turnout, not a strength of the Royal Ballet School. Rather than to lessen turnout, better to teach it properly from the thighs, knees AND feet. The dancer's technique in the battement tendu jeté demonstration is terrible. Does not close properly in fifth. Sinks on the supporting side. Most importantly her arms. What can I say, chicken wings. Some of the reasons Russian dancers are the very best: they insist on proper turnout and teach it safely, great tendus through the feet and amazing upper body and arms - all taught from Day One. Having said that, I have subscribed to your channel, and value your comments and commitment to technique - something often missing in the West and unfortunately all too often a reason for lost dreams.

i am a classical ballet dancer who really struggles to keep my lower back in place. is there a way to make my posture in to a good habit rather than having my lower back out?
@sunsetsav

The way I got my posture looking good was hearing how my teacher reacted when I didn't have the habit yet! Hope you can get your back nice and straight if you haven't already!

Apologies for delay in response- posture is hugely important, but I believe that glute activation is the way forward to maintain turnout and balance for your pirouettes.

It was confusing when he talked about the arms and the arm not leading but the body moving with the arms but then never demonstrated how to do that! Or what to do! It’s like a huge chunk was missed out, so am now none the wiser of what to do with the arms as you ‘take off’. He jumped from the preparation t9 the ending with nothing in the middle. Please redo this video! I’m desperate as I have an exam in November xx

I understand your frustration as there are at least 500 points where a pirouette can breakdown (if not more) I’m about to produce a whole new series of pirouette videos to help everyone, but until then if you need some guidance just let me know 👍

I see that you prefer not to cross the retiré , something that prefered too, when I was young, finding easier to keep my thigh and knee open.Just , out of curiosity, what is your explanation of not crossing it?
@howlyballet7744
@howlyballet7744 2 жыл бұрын
I trained at Royal when it followed Vaganova methodology so now I am programmed to love a high wide retiré. It’s a choice that I make work by focussing on hip flexor and glute development. Balanchine loved a crossed retiré so I think there’s definitely an argument for both to exist! 👍
