SNES (I'm trying real hard not to be bias but those chords are wicked for example 6:54 is missing on all of the other samples) > PC/PSP > MasterDrive > NEC PC-88 & PC Engine tie. Somebody saying the MegaDrive sounds better than the SNES I hear it but because the Trumpets are missing that's a deal breaker to me so SNES still superior. I have no idea what happened in that PS2 version it is terrible.

Yet another one of the MANY comparisons where I compare the SNES to the Genesis and go "why did/does everybody say the Genesis had better sound?" when it's not even a close competition whatsoever. The SNES easily wins, by a longshot.

Surprised there’s none from Boss Borot here. Comedic animations are his thing.

It's fun for someone introduced to the series by Strive seeing what people did before Xrd came along. Oh, yeah. This is also before we even had +R, isn't it?

Famicom and master system is killing my ears how badly they sound. The best one hands down is the PC engine The X6800 is decent for sure but PC engine slaps Only the 2009 PC/PSP versions slapp well enugh to be on par with PC engine but still PC engine out slaps them all.

I feel like the purpose of this video is so we could compare versions of the Valestein Castle music. But for me, it's just an opportunity to jam to all the different versions for more than 15 minutes.

The Turbografx 16 version is what made me respect and love video game music. Hearing "To Make the End of Battle" was literally life changing.

I agree. It was truly genre defining and could easily beat out other systems on music alone.

The intro music sounds like it definitely belongs in a Castlevania game or something - for some reason I just think of Castlevania 3: Dracula's Curse.

These videos are great! I didn't know there were so many versions of these songs. I played Oath in Felghana and loved the game and the soundtrack, I think those are still my favorite versions, I love the distorted guitar progressive rock sound, but I love 8 and 16 bit vgm too.

Even Mieko Ishikawa's original composition from 1989 for PC-88 was amazing if you think about it. How did she and other composers like Yuzo Koshiro squeeze so much out of limited sound technology, it's astounding. Those original compositions are the basis for what we have so many years later, they set the standards. Ys and JRPGs wouldn't be known for orchestral and neoclassical rock if it wasn't for them being inspired by the classically-influenced rock and even pop music at the time in the 80s. As much as I love the newer arrangements, I feel like some kick is lost that only those early synth sounds could provide, and that wasn't even how I heard these tracks the first time (I think I heard the PCE versions first, Ryo Yonemitsu arranges)
