No lie girl alot of people couldn't afford cooking oil, and even if we add cooking oil to cook we didn't have to use it because we render the fat from the meat.

@kim53235 exactly so. I'm proud to still carry these practices with me, and now that I'm a mom, I can teach our sons my traditions and cultural practices 😊😊

I never thought of this as a 'poor' practice. I learned of this as a child as a healthier way of cooking compared to using manufactured cooking oil. also, I wouldn't agree that MOST Jamaicans did this - and I still don't. but I will definitely agree that this is a classic example of 'tun yu an a mek fashan!', aka being resourceful.

@MachelN25 it all depends on where you're from in JA. A lot of ppl in the area where I'm from looked down on things like chicken back, fat oil, and even certain parts of the chicken. Not to mention if yuh nah eat big fish wid rice and pea pon sundeh dem tek yuh mek clown. Im not sure about uptown ppl, but I know a lot of ppl from the ghetto and country mek things like this.

@@maternalmemoirs There's nothing wrong with honoring humble beginnings, What's important are those life lessons that helped our ancestors to survive and thrive. Thank-you for articulating that lesson so that everyone can appreciate. My family is from the South and using bacon grease was common practice for cooking oil, their resourcefulness and tenacity is nothing to be ashamed of. PERIOD.

@crybaby475 The waterfall was indeed beautiful. It popped up overnight from the heavy rain. As for the fish... we always catch and release with the exception of some saltwater fish.
