Even when the car is not moving this can happen, because wind direction and speed can be different at different altitude. 1) Can throw reserve, 2) Can release tow line if in doubt. 3) Can cut tow line with hook knife if in doubt. 4) Can full stall or deep stall the wing so the landing is softer. And to avoid this to happen in the first place 5) Turn the glider head on toward the wind, in this case, hard right so the line paraglider leading edge points directly at the car.

I had my old gri-gri modified like yours. I didn’t realize that Petzl gave a nod of approval to those mods, I remember being a little hesitant about having someone drill and cut my brand new device but the function seemed worth it. Plus the fact that it still worked just as well for belaying a partner or rappelling a single line. I need to get my current gri-gri modded as my original one seems to be MIA.

Nobody mentioned that, aside everything already said, the pilot should have pulled the red release on his tow bridle, way before the "Oh shit".
@p394832 жыл бұрын
Yes, way before. As soon as he couldn't keep centered. It's perilous when towline tension is high and the wing is extra loaded. Once lockout develops and speed starts ramping up you're probably committed to a crash unless you have pretty extreme acro skills to dissipate that energy without getting balled up in the wing.
@shanesplanetshane3795Ай бұрын
ALL the safety measures in the world, don't help if you fail to employ them. I was thinking same. Once the brakes quit effecting the flight, grab that release. Of course, new pilots can easily find themselves in task saturation. Lots of mistakes made here with ample time to rectify them. Im glad the pilot is still alive, it could have been worse.

I skimmed through the comments and I didn't see anybody mention the fact that this pilot is hanging his body weight from the A lines on the left side. I guess right brake and left acceleration in a tow would slam anybody.
@vil646 жыл бұрын
Has anyone ever mentioned the most important thing in towing? The glider always has to stay square to the tow line! Never mind you are off the runway. You need to keep cross- referencing by looking at the glider and the tow line. So, you should’ve made some correction, way before you went into the lock out. Secondly, you always use radio to communicate with your winch driver. He screwed up by just driving and not checking your whereabouts. Hope you are alright.

happened to me-luckily after watching your post. thank you for sharing, you may have saved my life.and now the story. towing straight upwind in 5 to 8 knots. my first full tow, meaning first time fast up to max reach. driver takes the slack. announces tension. i launch forward in anticipation of the line tug, to find the tow line loose. that should not have happened. however, i manage the wing, the line catches up, but the pull is mild so i sink on takeoff, i have to pull brakes to help the lift and i find myself airborne. so far so good. then the line tugs me suddenly ahead of the wing (either a gust of wind or maybe a line pull ?!?). while i release the brakes to allow the wing to catch up, i get caught in crosswind, right wing tip rising fast above my head, left tip sinking under me, while driver yells to turn right in order to fly along the line. i comply and pull on right brake. at that moment i was flying almost like in your post, somehow drifting left of the towing line, while me braking right sank the right tip of the wing well behind me.the driver was still yelling, but with the wing dangerously behind, and with your video well studied, i disengaged without hesitation, controlled the surge of the wing forward and landed still upwind. a pilot watching from the ground said visibly shaken that it looked very dangerous. the driver couldn't confirm of loosing the tug, meaning i was the only person involved in the launch who actually did something in those moments. i believe i reacted fast thanks to your sharing. thank you! p.s. i specifically instructed the launch monitor (the person assisting the driver from the launch position) to abort on any irregularity, since that was my first fast pull up. i haven't heard anything radioed by the monitor, and since the driver was too far i cant really hold him responsible him for not loosening the tug. i believe your video, while tragic, has done a very useful job. can't thank you enough!

That's great, I'm glad to hear my video prepared you to take the initiative to abort! Well done!

Nick Roach is a lucky man. You may have been using just a bit too high of a performance wing for a beginner but the cause of this mishap wasn't your equipment from what I could tell. You say you were using right brake and the wing just wasn't responding. You didn't know the the further you are from centring your wing that the harder you have to pull to get the results you want. In any case, you certainly gave up on the right brake at the 19 second mark which really sealed your fate. That was your first "Oh Shit!" moment. Everyone involved, you, your instructor and the tow line operator should have released the tow line, stop the truck and cut tension on the line with the payout whence and/or guillotined the line at that point at the latest. Your instructor and the tow line operator are mainly at fault for this accident. They were too slow to notice you were in real danger of Locking Out and should have released tension earlier which would have allowed your wing to correct itself with your right brake inputs. It wasn't a cross wind. The wind sock's position says that there was minimal right crosswind. Your ground team ( especially the person operating the tow system) lost situational awareness at a critical point of your flight envelope. New tow operator syndrome I suspect? Too shy to pull the plug when it needs to be pulled ( with or especially without instructions from the instructor) and/or not trained properly on the tow system being used. Either way, that's the responsibility of your instructor. He shouldn't have been driving the truck that was towing you up. He should have been looking at you the entire time and clearly he wasn't. Shit happens. Try it again.

too much crosswind, low towing lenght (distance to winch too short), and pilot is not steering the glider towards the winch (maybe due to crosswind was too strong)
