What a great video ! I crewed....aboard 'Fantome" when I was nineteen (and slept on a deck bench for only a few weeks before signing off), when the ship was running week long charters between Nassau and Freeport. Van ? was the captain, usually wore a long whitish toga and was possibly ex ? RAF....and he always had "Amazing Grace" on bagpipes playing whenever the anchor was being raised. ~During one such incident, I was far above the deck in a bosun's chair painting red lead sealer on a mast, while another one of the crew was doing the same on the mast ahead of me....(and what a fantastic aroma !). The scene was surreal, hearing that beautiful music, while looking all around from such a lofty position and down towards crew and guests on deck, gray and white seabirds flying around and the ship outlined by the magnificent emerald water........ It was one of many fantastic adventures I was fortunate to experience aboard several sail and motor vessels, traveling through parts of the Caribbean and along the East coast up to Maine and returning months later. Although my time aboard Fantome was brief, it was quite memorable, made even more so by the great people I met during that time, especially the crew. ~I was deeply saddened to hear of her and her crew's loss at sea, especially during such a terrifying maelstrom. ~Fair winds and calm seas.~ Mike Ewald

Nothing like the experience of a Windjammer trip. My life has been void for over 20 years not being able to set sail on the great sailing ships of Windjamer.

My wife and I were on that last, overnight voyage which took us from Honduras to Belize. When we departed the ship on the 26th, I shook the Captain's hand and he said, "we'll have to get together soon and do this trip right", I replied, "and I sir owe you a drink, or two". Little did I know that was the last time I'd see him and that I'd owe him far more than a drink or two.

Thank you for sharing this. It’s a tragedy that isn’t spoken about enough. Titanic and the Andrea Gail get more attention. It’s time the Fantome has its own movie and documentaries.

I was on the Fantome summer 1998 with my family. It wasn't my first windjammer (Poly twice and the the Mandalay once) but these one was special, sharing the experience w/ my soon to be husband, my grandmother who was in her 70's at the time, my parents, brother, family friends and a lone travel (Gary lawyer from NY) who joined our peeps. I don't know why I've been thinking about this trip recently and the tragedy of the Fantome and the crew but I started doing some research. I found this amazing book, The Ship and The Storm by Jim Carrier. I’m listening to the book as I drive often for work. The first few minutes, the description he lays out about arriving to the boat, the experience just gives me chills. God bless the crew and their families.

Never got to go on the Fantome but won a week's cruise for two on the Yankee Clipper out of St. Lucia. One free week ended up being two weeks then we had to go standby out of Martinique (since we missed our return flight to Miami) so spent a third week in Martinique. When we got back to Miami the FBI was looking for us as we were reported kidnapped for ransom. But that's another story. Thank you for making this video. I was unaware of the fate of the Fantome and I can tell by the emotional comments here that there was truly a deep connection, including your connection. God bless the crew and Guyan who heroically saved 100 passengers.

The second the bagpipes began my heart soared and my tears welled. I had to stop right there and take a breath the memory of lying in the sun on her deck is a gift. The knowledge of the loss of the Fantôme and crew hit hard and remains hard. Such is life, Amazing Grace.

Yeah this looks great. Only thing I would say is the paddle needs to bite a bit deeper, but it's real easy to say that from this side of the design/build! Respect!

The paddles are not custom designed but are a kayak paddle cut up to use the two paddle heads. If I have a successful Indiegogo campaign, the final length of the paddles (or the paddle arm connector) will be perfected. www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-supski-paddle-system#/

Man, as someone who paddles almost daily, in conditions ranging from glass to 40 knot downwinders, I feel like maybe I'm supposed to be a purist that hates this, but it looks pretty awesome! I feel like this would do well in events like the seventy48 (Tacoma to Port Townsend). Love the versatility. Hope to run into one to try!
