Wish they would have added bonus performance material on the dvd Watching people talk about Elliott is great but having some performances to go along with it would have really been the complete package They could have easily added lucky 3 and have few other snippets from different performances

I love this movie! It’s a shame so much of the ‘From a Basement on the Hill’ content won’t get completely processed and mixed for a proper high quality release. Anyone know why the owners of that stuff are withholding so much of Elliott’s music he wanted out there?

Oh, man! The wristband! 😢 That's such a precious keepsake! I'm so glad it survived and wasn't thrown away. Elliott was such a sweetie pie to have cherished a gift for that long! Always, always missed.

As someone who's never been acquainted with E.S.' music, I can't say this doc was particulary good or well executed, as it failed to give me a sense of this mans 'musical greatness'. It felt more of an personal hommage of a somewhat random singer-songwriter from Portland, that had more of an impact on a local group of people, than anything else. Maybe diving a little bit deeper into some of his songs, excerpt of his lyrics etc., would have helped. Anyway, it didn't quite cut it for me.
@hankieaerosal60017 жыл бұрын
German V Maybe you should try familiarising yourself with his work a bit and revisit the film. It wouldn't invalidate anything you've said, but it'd be interesting to see if it your experience changes at all.

Yeah thanks for the tip, I just might. It's quite obvious his music has made an impact on a lot of people, so it did manage to trigger my curiosity. I'm kinda hoping his lyrics have some kind of depth though, and not that "straight forward", I think that's what will make or break it for me. But I'm going to give it a good try ;)

i was super excited to see this film, as i have loved E.S. for as long as i can remember. Ive listened to EVERY song(a million times), read every book, seen every clip, done all i can to learn all i could about him... Saying all that, i saw the film about 6 months ago, and all i can remember is, helicopter views of Portland, and songs off new moon... Im not saying I didn't like it, i mean, come on, it's Elliott Smith. But it just felt like a virtual hlcptr tour of Prtlnd.

This was a great documentary. If they got anything wrong, it was the decision to use unreleased pieces of music, alternative versions, obscure songs, etc. for the soundtrack. Just use his most famous songs (which are not uncoincidentally also his best songs). Because that is what will draw people in & create new fans: the power of his songs.
@TapeCollageForEloise6 жыл бұрын
I would say some of Elliott's least well known songs are some of his best songs actually. Though his most famous songs are certainly pretty incredible in general.

Teaser looks good, but the documentary was disappointing to me. Too much random information, not enough in depth-footage. After watching it, I still didn't have a clear image of Elliott Smith's persona and why his music was at times so personal and sad.
@hammill444 Жыл бұрын
Maybe that’s because no one truly knows the answer to those questions. Some things are simply unknown
@gotf9 жыл бұрын
Overall I was disappointed ion the documentary. I feel like there's not enough focus on his music itself, the actual albums and the songs in the documentary. And I also feel like they danced around his life too much and didn’t go in depth enough about his life. I don't feel like they really told anything about Elliott that we already didn't know. I feel like I get more info watching youtube interviews and reading his wiki page than watching the doc. The doc felt like a rough overview of Elliott instead of showing us the real Elliott. And they should’ve got other big artist to talk about how they were affected by his music like Sufjan Stevens, Conor Oberst, and Laura Marling. Even Jack Black. I know it was hard to make the doc and they probably couldn’t get all of the interviews they wanted to get but I think it’s important to hear from his mother and his real father (not Charlie, fuck him).
@Bleech6069 жыл бұрын
gotf tbh, it doesn't go into too much detail but I think that preserves Elliott's dignity to some extent... I thought it gave a good overview and did well to capture Elliott's sweet nature...
@gotf9 жыл бұрын
I know Elliott had some rough shit he been through in life but I feel like why do a doc if you were too afraid to paint him honestly as possible. I mean Cobain was great but he also had things he did that he did that wasn't so great. I feel like it was an injustice not to show the a lot of the bad parts as well as the good parts. I mean they simply said he didn't get along with Charlie. No, Charlie beat him and his mother for years and even sexually abused Elliott. I don't know why they couldn't say that. It's horrible but it happen. It almost felt like his close friends didn't know him. They didn't even go into the good side of Elliott as much as they should. Like how Elliott helped this kid who was getting harassed by the cops and got beat up by the cops as a result. Elliott would've hated anyone making any film about him I'm sure no matter what so I don't get why they just couldn't o in depth about his life. I feel like putting on soft gloves defeated the purpose of making a doc.
@Bleech6069 жыл бұрын
perhaps it's more of a tribute
@malcolmz23609 жыл бұрын
gotf Fully agree with you. Watched the movie with my girlfriend (who is not a huge Elliott-fan) and afterwards she said: "I didn't get a clear impression of who Elliott Smith was". That's basically it - there's too many anecdotes, but not much in depth-stuff about f.e. Elliott's (traumatic?) childhood, his sad lyrics, his drug-issues, his death (has been covered in "Searching for ES", but nevertheless). But hey - at least it's the best ES documentary around.
@clariannorth63049 жыл бұрын
Malcolm Z it could've gotten a lot deeper and dramatic ; gone deeoer into interpretations of who he was as a person addictions, depressions, personal life etc. but as a tribute to his work and some chronological insight and research, it's beautiful simply because his songwriting is beautiful and outstanding. it's nice have this. i think it was cool and remained classy.

I just saw the film in NYC and feel the need to offer my two cents. First, I love Elliott: he was in my opinion the greatest singer songwriter of my time. I don't think anyone since the Beatles compares with him in the depth and number of great songs. And his guitar playing is crazy and innovative. He was a genius. I respect that the filmmakers loved him too, and he was a daunting subject to tackle. The best part of the film was the cinematography. I've listened to, read and watched everything I can get my hands on and spoke with some who knew him, so maybe I know more than most. But I do not think this film came close to doing him justice. Neil Gust wasn't in it? In the Q&A the director was asked if he thought of interviewing his parents in it; he actually said it never crossed his mind! How do you not put in arguably the most important people in Elliott's life into a documentary on him? The worst part for me was how little good you would have learn about him if you didn't know him before seeing this film. Yes, yes, we all know about about the drugs and the tragic death. For goodness sakes the first ten minutes is about his death! But what did you contribute in terms of us knowing just how prolific a songwriter he was? Very, very little, and that's sad. He had so much material to talk about! What about discussing with artists who loved him just how good he was and why? They has some local Portland people to talk about him saying he was great. But why was he great? Give us some insights. Explain what made him great. Jon Brion offered some ideas and that was good. But there were so many others you could have asked - musicians who could have explained why they admired him. Beck maybe? How about the key changes in Alameda and why it was so unusual? And where the hell was Gus Van Zandt? Why did Gus select of all the people in the world to put a relatively unknown Elliott in his movie? There's actually a great story behind that, but almost no mention of it. They played a lot of parts of his songs in the background, but I don't think the movie played even half of one song. Of course, the movie ends with some lines about the cause of his death being undetermined. But people deserved some insights and thoughtfulexamination as to why he was so great, some incentive for the newly initiated to explore about him. I don't think you are going to get that here. It's fragmented and superficial. One day hopefully someone will delve into the positives of Elliott's life and the great, great music he left us, because there is so much.
@tigerbos91014 жыл бұрын
All good points. I'm going to go out on a limb and venture a guess why more people weren't involved and guess because it was a public funded film that perhaps they couldn't interview everyone they wanted however, it is crazy that you wouldn't at least attempt to talk with his parents - obvious that is just pretty thoughtless!
@carloseduardospohr12354 жыл бұрын
Wonderful words, i agree with all of it. Writing here from Pelotas/RS/Brazil, Elliot Smith is the greatest songwriter and singer of the 90's, indeed... i've just seen the movie and is great in several points... but, how to say... the death just brought in that stigma about elliot's life, and it just can't overlap the art, the songs are so much more relevant, because its beautiful, its true, it comes from the soul... its funny that a lot of people came to known this wondeful singer because of the dead's episode, very explored actually when media eventually talk about elliot; and by knowing the songs, those people came to that conclusion too, that elliot smith just wrote the most adorable songs in the 90's, maybe more, and that's the important thing. I agree with you as well about the the gaps in the script, especially the family, another artists... and that thing with his wife in the end, judging her and apparently blaming her, partially at least, for the end, which in my opinion just result in decrease the credibility of a documentary in general, i like the facts, the more facts the better, and i make the judgments... Well, is just a good thing to know that there are these bunch of so fcking greatest songs in the world right now to help us face that obscure times and the quarentine itself, and honor his memory.
