Congratulations. It sounds like a wonderful idea. It sounds ‘grown up’ if that makes sense to you. Congratulations to all who have worked so hard to make this a reality and to the present company who have also worked hard to see it’s fulfilment. Looking forward to seeing , and enjoying, Singapore Ballet 🩰. 👏👏👏👏👏🩰🩰🩰🩰🇦🇺🇦🇺👵👵

I loved Choo San. He choreographed the year-end recital for the Robera Fera School of Ballet in Silver Spring, Maryland, where I'd studied, at the time, outside DC, after he first moved there to be resident choreographer for the Washington Ballet. We were all thrilled to have a choreographer of that caliber in DC, when the company was first starting out, apparently. We'd also go to the ballet in large groups, getting half-price tickets for the Kennedy Center, and sometimes, he'd buy one of those, too. I, essentially, "'followed" him to the Washington Ballet School, where he taught me, too, in the summer and fall of 1977. But, after a slew of "Nutcrackers"--where he would perform, too, as we all did (he danced the lead in Candy Canes in Act II)--I gave up dance, after I was molested, when I ran away from my physically and verbally abusive father, in the summer of 1977 and early 1978. I recall Choo San could "sense" something was going on with me, as one day, his "correction" was, "You lost it." Then, several years later, I returned to dance, only to take my college fund money my Uncle Felix set up for me, when I was born, to study, part of that time, in NYC. I had dropped out of community college to pursue a career in ballet--again--even though I had missed earlier training, which was essential. I regret that, as I really did belong in college, at that point, but back then, dancers didn't go to college that much. Now, I think things are a bit different. I read Choo San got a degree, as his father wanted him to, and I ended up getting one, too--at my father's behest, later on, when I realized that dance wasn't making me happy, which surprised me, frankly, after all that work I put into it. Anyway, while in NYC, from 1982-84, I ran into Choo San at the Joffrey Ballet School, and he immediately said to me, "I know you, don't I?" And while I, of course, said, "Yes," I was shy, and I never told him why I quit dancing in the first place or anything like that. When he died of AIDS, nearly 30 years ago, now, I went to his memorial at the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center, where Misha spoke. He appeared a bit drunk--as I used to get, back then, too, sometimes. A pinnacle of Choo San's career was choreographing, "Configurations," on Misha and ABT, back in 1981. Mom recorded a documentary on the subject, "Baryshnikov: The Dancer and the Dance," from TV, and I have it on tape. I plan to transfer it to DVD and upload it here. It is sad there is not more of Choo San and his work on this site for all to see. Choo San was an innocent person, to my mind. That is what made him so refreshing. One "last" memory--one time, at the Kennedy Center, when we were all going to see a ballet together, he told my parents, who were both in attendance, which was a rarity, since Dad didn't like the ballet, how I have the "carriage of a princess," meaning my port de bras was nice. I will never forget that. And I will admit, that when he died of AIDS-related viral colitis, I had just come out of two casual dating scenarios. I never engaged in any again. RIP Choo San. I miss you. Love, Vivian Taube :)

Vivian, your name sounds familiar and I wonder if our paths crossed at some point between the Joffrey Ballet School and D.C. To this day, my most burning memories of dancing onstage were in his ballets "Fives," "Double Contrasts," and "Synonyms." Unfortunately, I too realized that apart from dancing in Choo San's ballets," dance (in general) wasn't making me happy." I quit the company at the start of Spring season. Choo San was furious and had someone call me to try and talk me out of it. That summer, I was back in his ballet class at the Joffrey School. Mid-barre, he walked up to me and said, "So--are you happy now?" It was meant to be ironic, but he nailed my inner conflict. Choo San was a man of few words but many powerful ballets. I'm grateful for all he gave us and for the lifelong memory of what it felt like to be "really dancing."

@@skydancer3166 I never danced with the Washington Ballet, itself, as a member--only in its "Nutcrackers," in the winter of 1977, when I was 16 and on release-time in its school. Your name sounds familiar, too. Frankly, as much as I admired Choo San, what I wanted, as a dancer, was to be Kenneth MacMillan's muse--though that never happened. When I finally met Kenneth--when he ran ABT with Misha in 1984 and was setting his "Romeo and Juliet," on it, that fall, at the Kennedy Center--he chose me for a bit part, that of lady-in-waiting to Lady Capulet, as a supernumerary; but I didn't have the courage to ask Kenneth for a dance audition. I had just started at the University of Maryland, full-time, at my father's behest, for one. I also didn't want to work for ABT. Misha was a great dancer, but he had a reputation of firing his former partner, Gelsey Kirkland, and Patrick Bissell for doing cocaine--and all the while Misha drank, from what I know. Back then, I was not clean and sober, myself. ABT was my third choice in company to work for. The Royal was second, but it didn't take Americans, back then, the way it did later. The Stuttgart, which Marcia Haydee ran like a big, happy family, was my first, but it was so far away. I had supered with the company in 1977, and I did consider asking her for a dance audition then, but I didn't do that, either. My recollection is that I was very attached to Mom, and I didn't want to move that far away from her. I danced for her approval, too, as she was a balletomane. When Kenneth died of a sudden heart attack, while backstage reviving, "Mayerling," in late 1992, I gave up dance class--though I'd switched to modern, at that point, and I was taking only about a class a week, then--and I gave up smoking cigarettes, too. The following year, I got clean and sober, and I have remained that way.

@@LivingDove I was at the ABT audition when Baryshnikov took over as director. I found it dehumanizing; the whole vibe was bad from the outset. My first love was the Joffrey Ballet, but after 2 years at the school I never got past super in Petrouchka. In my experience, you didn't ask directors for auditions; they let you know if they were interested in you. If they didn't ask, well, that was your answer. And if you asked THEM after that point, you weren't gonna like the answer. I gave up ballet class in 2000, but started back a couple of years ago--for very different reasons this time around... .

@@skydancer3166 So, you auditioned for ABT as a dancer? If so, did Misha want you to join the company? I studied at the Joffrey Ballet's school only seldom. The two years I studied in NY, I was mostly at David Howard's studio and the Darvash School. I chose to study at the latter because Madame Darvash had a maiden name similar to mine--Taub--and I felt alone and scared in NY. She didn't particularly like me, though, so I wonder why I continued to study there. Prior to moving to NY, in 1982, I was at the Maryland Youth Ballet for a year. Tensia Fonseca, the director, had encouraged me to go to NY and study at David's school. Frankly, I wasn't very good, at the time, having taken off crucial years of training after I was molested in the summer of 1977 and early 1978. I had started late begin with, at age 13, in 1974. But, in NY, I grew to be quite good. David was the best teacher I ever had. He could have taught anyone to dance well, using kineosology, as he did. I don't know if you ever worked with the Stuttgart, but the atmosphere was really like one, big happy family, and I doubt Marcia Haydee would have been put off, had I had the fortitude to ask her for a dance audition. I was 16 that summer I was a super with the company, though, in 1977, and I doubt she would have taken me into it--but maybe into the John Cranko School in Germany. But, I just don't think I wanted to leave Mom behind--even though she was from Germany, and it would have been sort of like a "homecoming" for me, in a way. One of my issues has been eating disorders, and when I was younger, I was anorexic/exercise-bulimic. Then, when I gave up regular dance class and smoking, in late 1992, I put on weight, slowly, over the next 20 years or so. I have since then, begun to take the weight off again, but I am still heavy and need to lose a significant amount of weight. I also have several spinal conditions, so taking ballet would not be a good idea anymore for me. I do like African dance--I always have. I live in the San Francisco Bay area, and a few years ago, I went to the Bioneers Conference, where a very gifted teacher, Afia Walking Tree, gave African dance and drum workshops outside, which was glorious. I don't think she is local, though.

@@LivingDove Wow--we have a lot in common. I started dancing seriously at 13, studied at David Howard's in the late 70s. My 3 roommates in NY were from Bethesda, MD, and I'm pretty sure they studied at Maryland Youth Ballet. I live in the S.F. Bay area now and was seriously into African dance during the 1990s. Is there another platform we can continue our conversation?
