@ericschulte1853 have you considered swapping a solid front axle into your fantastic Safari or are you pretty happy with the role it serves now?
@ericschulte18535 күн бұрын
Always fantasizing about the SAS for my van. The IFS is the limiting factor that I have not been able to overcome. It eats ball joints and idler arms. It's limited on difficult off-road terrain. Right now its my light adventure/camping/utility/daily driver rig, and I love its versatility and the way it looks. Maybe in the future when I'm ready to spend countless sleepless nights working through all the inevitable problems with harsh ride and steering geometry, I'll tackle the SAS swap. But I won't have the time or patience for that anytime soon. THanks for watching!

Hey @waroffroad. Curious if you have any suggestions for a recently bought 200 GMC Safari. It didn't make it home less than 50 miles away. It had broken a CV axle up front. shop wants to replace both, and are showing diff damage. Been owned about a week. Any suggestions for anything else that I should be aware of? We aren't going to do much off roading and I fully get that it isn't truely meant for heavy off road use. However, converting back to regular AWD isn't an option for us.
@ericschulte18534 күн бұрын
If you don't need 4wd capability remove the front drive axles, leave just the outer stub/cup to hold the hub all together. Ran mine like this while I was rebuilding the front differential. Otherwise just replace what's broken. Is it lifted too much compromising axle geometry?

Oh? So This is What You Need To Do To Re-Engineer And Cut This Back And Hammer This Over Here! Zero Stainless! So Phase 3 We Want To Direct Your Attention To! WHY? These Vans Go 500k Miles Just Changing The Oil. This Is How You Start Fixing Stuff That Was Never Broke! And Need To Fix Stuff You Broke!

People Want GM to Make These again? They Stopped Making Them Because They Lasted To Long With Little Repair, Durable & Dependable and There's No Money In That! If They Made It Again, It Would Have LED Lights and Cameras But The Quality Would Be Re-Engineered To Fail! The Original Vans Had Junk Lines Made To Rust Out In 100K Miles and Zero Undercoating So The Van Would Rot Out. If They Make It Again It Will All Have a Best If Sold By Date. Everything These Days Is Trash! I have Owned 5 Of These Vans, All Went between 400k-500K Before Rust Made Me Sell Them! I'm In The Salt Belt Of New England! I Now Have a 1995 LT AWD With 50K Miles That I Bought With 38K In Showroom Mint Condition Other Than The A/C Leaked. I Wouldn't Think Of Changing Anything That Didn't Need To Be Changed! LEAVE IT ALONE! Change The Oil and Use Tuff-Oil! It's A Van Made For Roads! Lift Kits Rip The CV Boots So More Problems! Everything Engineered On This Van Was For Driving ON ROADS in the Snow! Making It an Off Road Rock Crawler Will End It's Life Very Fast. The Engine Will Last Forever and Uses No Oil If You Take Care Of It But The Mechanics Of This Was Not Engineered To Climb Rocks! If You Want To Make It Last UNDERCOAT IT! Change All The Lines To Stainless and Stainless Exhaust! The Rear End Diff Will Get a Wherr In Many Of These Vans So Fill It With Tuff-Oil 100% Before It Gets Warn.

Why nobody talked u out of running leafs is beyond me. Why did u handicap and punk the coil system up? U do know u can still rid those old tech leafs and simply link with dual rate coil springs. Toss 2" air bumps front and rear , bypass shocks. And u will have a Cadillac feeling rig again.

Hey man, not sure if you still have this - My pal Dave and I improved upon an idea that had been out there - Another guy, Kai, out in the desert made a set of engine lift brackets to lift the engine and transmission back UP into the body - This gets the oil pan way up there. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3WXpmSfbbGEgcU
@ericschulte18534 күн бұрын
I like that mod. Brilliant and solves a lot of little issues. I have shimmed my motor mounts just to keep my oil pan off the front axle and that's working, but the extra protection by hoisting the engine back up would be ideal. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kGHMnp-Omax6ptU

Pretty cool.... ive got a 2002 awd, and the General A/T2s i have, in stock 215/75 rub in the front (not stock wheels, i think they're from a pickup, maybe a little more offset) I already raised the torsion bars a little, might look into the journey kit. What i really need, heh, is better gas mileage!

My 1998 Astro 2wd got burned in a house fire this year. I decided to fix it 3 weeks ago. It's back on the road already and I have everything but the AC working. I'm getting inspired to do something like the awning and swivel seat and use it as a camper. Turned 297k this week and 21 mpg still. Down from 22-23 when just 100k on it. Changed 5 qts of the transmission fluid today.still just some paint work to finish the fire restoration. Don't think these can be killed

Smart idea with the laser. Well done. We had several Safari Vans when our kids were growing up. None were AWD but those were great vans. I used to hunt out of mine, just by taking out the seats and laying in my sleeping and hunting gear. That one looks new

@@JK-ry7id I'm not sure about that. One doesn't have to be rich to take care of things. Sometimes, people save money to make things happen. Or, we fix things up over years. I've seen someone buy a suburban for like $3200, stock, and the timeline to bring it up to part was about 3-ish years. It was a really neat video. The suburban looked niiiice after. ^_^
