Back in the medieval world you could've just become the town scribes helper boy in exchange for him teaching you to read and some basic math. Then you'd become a scribe somewhere or the same with blacksmith, artesans etc. and you'd be instantly in the top 10% in earnings and respect. Now for the same thing you go to school for 20 years, work your ass off for another 20 years, and then you can achieve the same type of status some 20 yo boy in medieval world had, who could read and write or make a sword. The bar has never been higher.
