Can you use this electrode to separate gold from alloy
@BlueMoonshine
@BlueMoonshine 22 сағат бұрын
In order to do an electrolysis with gold you would first need to dissolve the alloy in Aqua Regia. But then it is easy to recover the pure gold by precipitating it with sodium metabisulfite, then melt it. No electrolysis needed. Watch my tutorial: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hH7ddZh4ebaIfsU

Lead plate (2mm) anode is actually corroded but It is well tolerated due to the lead oxide (IV) deposited on the surface. In addition, my system was dropped titanium mesh cathode ($1/pcs) in pot and thus it can remove magnesium hydrate from cathode in pot. Finally, several liters of about 25% sulfuric acid would be obtained from the container.

10:49 Perhaps physics should be used in this case. If you push 1 Amp through a solution, the solution will heat up considerably, ergo evaporation.
@BlueMoonshine
@BlueMoonshine 5 күн бұрын
No, we can rule out this hypothesis because evaporation is proportional to the area of contact with the air. Thus, if the water level in the clay pot decreases by 50% due to evaporation, then the level should also decrease by the same amount in the main dish. But that wasn't the case. It turns out that what actually happened is osmosis: Water from the clay pot was sucked out by the solution from the main dish which becomes hydrophilic.

Without it my digestion shuts down completely. Lately, my weak solutions seem to expire a lot faster for some reason and the price of the saturated solution has gone up. Im considering the option of producing small amounts. What is the best method for this, in your opinion? It seems to me h2so4 will be harder to obtain than the hcl.

What I've been doing lately is just buy HCl at Lowes or at The Home Depot. They sell it for about $15 a gallon, and it has a concentration of 30%. I purify it with this simple method (kzbin.info/www/bejne/apOQqWChga-cbac) and I end up with pure HCl with a concentration of about 20%.

Nice work, thank you. Thanks for going through all the reactions. It's so easy to treat electrolysis like a recipe, learning by rote and just repeating what has worked before. It makes it hard to spot problems when things go wrong. The most favorable reaction at any given moment can change due to temperature, voltage, contamination, chinese electrodes, etc. Knowing what should be happening is not enough, you need to know everything that can happen, and under what circumstances.

A warning about suckback would be advised. What is suckback? There comes a point when a vacuum is created in the generator and sucks the water back into the generator, which creates an even greater pull, sucking all the water through the hose. Ironically, this is the same way to quench the acid generator: putting the hose in fresh water and dropping [dripping] a lot of water onto the salt, which in turn sucks all the water through the hose to end the reaction. I wonder what everybody has been doing to end the reaction of HCl otherwise.

"I do not know if people here are smart enough, but..." A person who pretends to be "smart" should be smart enough to be able to smell in the passenger compartment if the battery located under the hood of a normal car is leaking (that happened to me several times). It should be even easier when the battery is located in the trunk, like in a Prius, and believe me I will be able to tell if something is going wrong and take appropriate action. So far, it has been 5 months, and everything is fine.

@BlueMoonshine Ik how to make aqua regia and all. I have not only muriatic acid and hydrogen peroxide but also nitric and hydrochloric acid because I was planning on growing gold crystals using electrochemistry. The sulfuric acid is added after refining (a few drops) but before adding smb to make the gold that drops even more pure. I was also going to be using s02 gas as well because it drops the gold faster and while smb will give you very pure gold s02 gas works way faster and will be even more pure

@BlueMoonshine also one more thing I was wondering; my hotplates don't reach up to 337°C which is 639°F so they won't get hot enough to boil the acid. Is this a good thing because it will only evaporate water and all the other impurities or does it HAVE to be hot enough to boil the acid specifically?
@BlueMoonshine
@BlueMoonshine 24 күн бұрын
@@Deku-ue3bu It's hard to tell. It depends on the type of impurities. Some will boil off below 100°C, some will boil off above 100°C. Also, the concentration of your final sulfuric acid will depend on the temperature that you can reach. You can find some tables on the web that give the concentration of sulfuric acid as a function of its boiling temperature.

This is a dumb question but can you over do the electrolysis? Like what would happen if I just keep the electrolysis going?
@BlueMoonshine
@BlueMoonshine 27 күн бұрын
When all the copper sulfate has been turned into sulfuric acid, then it is the water that gets electrolyzed, hence producing hydrogen at the cathode and oxygen at the anode. Therefore, no pollution of the acid is produced by over-doing the electrolysis. Actually, I recommend doing it to make sure that all the copper sulfate has been consumed.

Hi and thank you for the informative video! What confused me was, weren't you supposed to get close to 54.4 ml of sulfuric acid, instead of 5 ml? Did something go wrong or did I not understand something
@BlueMoonshine
@BlueMoonshine Ай бұрын
The value 54.4 ml that I calculated was an upper limit. That's what we would get if everything was perfect. But the separating membrane (the clay pot) is not perfect, it lets some of the sulfuric acid leak out and some of the magnesium hydroxide leak in. The acid reacts with the magnesium hydroxide and gives back Epsom salt and water. So the reaction never goes to completion. Also, some other reactions take place and by products are formed instead of sulfuric acid.

dont do this. The original battery has different chemistry in it. The normal batteries will smell like rotten eggs due to off gasing of sulfuric acid. Ask me how i know. Make sure you get the same battery chemistry if possible. The small battery is not used for starting the vehicle so matching the CCA is not the only issue to worry about. I used to do this too but now i have a place that has aftermarket cheap replacement here in Phoenix called south Phoenix batteries llc. But am sure any place that reconditions batteries in your city knows this things. Two things to consider, this battery is in the cabin so the gases will affect you. And it gets its charging from the big hybrid battery through a step down transformer or trickle charger so it will behave differently from a normal battery that gets topped of from an alternator. So its lifetime will get affected too.due to how small its size is trickle charging is not good and will kill it sooner than later. But of course do your own research this was my first hand experience after i did whats shown in this video about 5 years ago
