I don’t understand what people are talking about. San Francisco is so much better now. The city is getting more and more beautiful. There is more to do in the city than ever before.

If you asked me about the people here today, about a quarter live in social housing, almost a third are wealthy young adults-many of them trust fund kids in their twenties-another third are self-centered tech workers more interested in disrupting things than creating jobs, and around 15% are from the LGBTQ+ community. Families are becoming rare because it's not a good place to raise kids anymore. Luckily, San Francisco can take comfort in the fact that Los Angeles looks even worse.

Now look at it...Junkies, corrupt politicians, aliens, copious numbers of mentally-ill, and the "gender and sexual non-conformists". Insanity. We need a Great Reset.

The City Of Paris ... I take it this was before everyone in the states began vocalizing 'the French' as a supreme negative?! --- seems to me, if that amount of nasty is coming out of someone's mouth, it's THEM what is the problem.

NOT MUCH HAUTE COUTURE @ Tenderloin in 2024 ... How embarrasing,, but not 4 the homeless industrial COMPLEX. To the folks appearing in these wayback shots, the lunatic situation of today would drive most of them either out of town, to turn to municipal terrorism or to commit suicide. Nice options 4 every truly sane ol time friscoite ! Their honor & PRIDE would nev7hhh have allowed them to mentally figure the hypocrite, current decay OUT.

My father, born in 1929 (may he rip) always use to talk about this San Francisco. And how the men went downtown back in the day with a hat on, & the women always had a hat & gloves on. But as we all know, nothing remains the same, people, & places evolve.

in reading the comments..... back in the day 'they' 'watched' Carol Doda as her breasts grew.... then there was the infamous exterior sign that advertised her 'new assets'............ seemed very scandalous back then.... They had a parade for Charles Lindbergh down Market Street. I also remember the hats and gloves - and the controversy when people started wearing jeans 'everywhere'.... stories in the newspaper of some wealthy person not being waited on b/c of how they were dressed.... LOL

I love Herb Caen, and I can only imagine San Francisco got worse in his absence. It lost its charm and its pride, both of which were epitomized in his writing. Drugs seem largely to blame, but also enormous cultural shifts in the 60's and 70's which emphasized bohemian living despite the poverty and low standards it cultivates. Bad leadership exacerbated the problem and now the only pride they have is the pride of ignorance; the pride of believing San Francisco still has its historical charm despite it being nowhere to be seen in the modern day.
