The bit I don't get is at 0:26 the truck comes right off the slots about an inch high yet continues to move...how is that possible?

STS 1/43 (and later TT 1/32) models from Exin (mid-late 80's to early 90's ), they have a long arm spring loaded guide that makes contact with the rail in all these obstacles. Pretty amazing and fun

Actually, STS cars featured a spring-loaded, extrensible support for the rail guide, kind of like the pantograph on a tramway, except upside down.
